We drove for about three miles before we got to the big gates with the big black letters that spelt out,
"WELCOME TO ACURA HIGH"
I had to stop myself from throwing up, when I saw the school motto.
"Education is our weapon."Longingly, I looked at mom. My eyes were begging her to homeschool me instead but she'd made up her mind. Hesitantly, I climbed out of the car and closed the door behind me. She drove away, and left me there at the gate.
"No turning back now."
I walked in. At first nobody noticed me, but then as I walked further into the school, I noticed heads turning. I almost thought they'd noticed me but I was wrong. There was someone behind me, crowded by a bevy of dumb heads. I rolled my eyes so far back, I thought I'd seen my brain for a second there.
Eventually, I got curious and walked over to the mob. After a good deal of shoving and elbowing, I finally got a good look. It was a guy. No, not just any guy.
HE WAS AN ADONIS. A GREEK SCULPTURE OF A MAN. HE WAS DEFINITELY A DEMIGOD.
I stood there, gawking at the handsome piece of cake. He looked about 18 maybe 19, with amazing blue hair and icy blue eyes. He had a piercing just above his eyebrow which made him look even hotter and every time he opened his mouth to talk, I could've sworn I saw a tongue piercing too.
But then I managed to get a good look at him. That guy they were flocking, was André!
We were best friends until 6th grade, right after I began wearing blue lenses. One day, his family upped and moved. He neither called nor bothered to try and explain why he'd left me alone. I'd spent weeks crying over the loss of my best friend and it took me a while to get used to his absence and make new friends but in the end, I only succeeded with one of those things.
I learnt from the other girls that his name was Hawk now, and he was now a model. This whole time, he'd been in France but now he was back cause of family or something. I didn't stick around to hear more. I deduced that I wasn't going to be noticed by him anytime soon, cause of the many, many, MANY other beautiful girls. Next to them, I looked like dog poo.
Plus, he probably didn't remember me.
Just as I was about to leave, I snuck one more glance at him and by some messed up miracle, he looked me in the eye and smiled quickly, before I moved away and ran into the school.
What is wrong with me?!
I could feel my heart racing. He had smiled. Maybe he recognised me. Maybe he remembered me! I could feel the feelings rush back. All the times I'd tried to confess and kept quiet. All the dandelions I'd wished on, wishing he'd look at me and see the love of his life. But then, reality slapped me. I walked even quicker.
Any crush I'd had on him was to be locked away in my cold heart. André-Hawk, whatever his name was, and Xaela, would never happen!
As I walked away as quickly as I could, I kept my head down and apologized every time I bumped into someone. My mind was flooded with memories of me with André before the lenses. He was the only one who, instead of being repulsed, was attracted to it. My real eye colour! We'd spend hours talking about the possible reasons behind the strange eye colour.
One of the theories was that my mom had drunk mercury and silver during my pregnancy and instead of killing me, it seeped into my brain and mixed into my retinas and splashed itself into my irises. I especially laughed at that theory of his. He always made me laugh. I loved his smile and how it made me feel okay. I hadn't realised how much I'd missed him until I'd seen him.
My heart was beating at an even faster rate now. Seeing him brought back so many memories. I'd had a crush on him since third grade but when he left, I dismissed it as infatuation. I didn't know it then but I knew I felt something when I saw him again that morning. And that something was stronger than the feeling I got after the dandelion wishes.
Eventually I got to the reception and I had to look up to talk to the person behind the counter.
"Good morning. Could I please have the schedule?"
I hoped my cheeks weren't red."Sure honey. Ere ya go."
"Thanks. What time does school start?"
"Oh ye'll know when yer ear the first bell in ferteen minutes."
"Pardon?"
"Yer eard me. Ferteen minutes."
"She said fourteen."I turned around to see Hawk. He just nodded and walked away, leaving me in a state of utter confusion.
