The smell of coffee wafted through the hallway enticing Estela’s senses. The last time she had enjoyed the drink was on the morning of that ill-fated day. She hadn’t suspected, as she sipped on her bone-dry cappuccino, that her life would never be the same again. But she was still the same girl, with the same preferences. She longed to hold a steaming cup of the bitter drink in her palms and feel the fragrant steam settle on her face. She began to walk faster until she was at the unmarked door. She didn’t wait to knock.
They knew she was coming.
They were werewolves and they had heard her footsteps. “Hello!” She said softly, walking straight to the coffee maker and pouring herself a cup. She took the time to add sugar and stir it, the simple gesture helping her to connect with reality.
Reality. She was safe. For now. She was home. Also, for now. For now, was as good as it was going to get.
“How is she?” Gia asked.
“Same.” She answered. “So…how can I help?”
“You can take over where Declan left off…researching the council of Elders.”
‘Declan. That pompous ass,’ She thought to herself.
Carrying her coffee mug over to the desk she sat down and began to work. Hours came and went but no one noticed until Declan returned to the room.
“Back so soon?” Estela asked.
“It’s been four hours!” He answered.
“But she is your mate. Four hours shouldn’t be enough!” She snapped.
“Well, it wasn’t enough for your information. I just thought that it might be nice for Jane....Elara…to have her parents with her for a while.”
“I’ll go!” Gia exclaimed excitedly as she jumped up from her chair and prepared to leave.
Unable to be in the same room as Declan, Estela stood up and walked over to her father.
“Dad?” She asked sweetly.
“Yes, honey?”
“I’m exhausted. I’ve been away from home too long, Dad. Can I please go home to my own bed? I need it.”
“No!” Echoed Alpha Bill and Declan.
No conversation was private in a room full of werewolves.
“They are right, honey. It’s too dangerous. You are the heir now. You are the one they want.”
“Well, why don’t you come with me?” She asked.
“There is so much work to be done, Estela.”
“Declan can go with her…” Alpha Bill suggested.
“No!” Estela and Declan echoed in unison.
“Why not?” Bill asked.
“You need me here, pops. There is so much to get done.” Declan explained.
“It’s okay, Declan. Take Estela home. This is the last time she will get to sleep in her bed until all this is over. And Estela dear, please pack your things while you are there.”
“My things?” She asked forgetting all about Declan.
“We shall be leaving tomorrow night for Germany.”
