Declan let out a sigh as the sound of the shower from upstairs drifted to his ears.  What had just happened? Why was he reacting this way? It was true that he felt no sparks when he touched her. So why was his mind playing tricks on him? Was it because Elara was dying? Had nature found him another mate? But he had marked Elara, surely that meant something?

The TV did little to occupy his mind. He decided to walk around the house and make sure all the windows and doors were locked. Once that was done, he made rummaged through the fridge and made couple of sandwiches for himself and Estela. Walking as quietly as he could, he climbed the stairs to her room.  Giving the sandwich a long look, he bent down and left the plate outside her bedroom door.

The less time they spent together, the better off they were, he decided. With that he made his way back down to eat his own sandwich.

Soon, with his belly full, he lay down on the couch. The soft humming of the TV lulled him into a deep sleep.

Feeling better after the long shower, Estela dressed herself in her favorite PJ’s. She was hungry. But the kitchen was downstairs and so was Declan.  She did not want to see him. Maybe if she were quiet he wouldn’t hear her? Slowly, she opened the door and looked into the hallway. Phew. Coast clear!  Just then her stomach began to rumble when her nostril picked up the scent of food. She spotted the sandwich, picked it up and bit into it, her stomach grumbling with pleasure.

It was a nice gesture no doubt, perhaps a peace offering?  Pushing the thought out of her head, she concentrated on her sandwich. It was a simple one, a couple of slices of ham and cheddar cheese in between two slices of wholegrain bread.  How she wished he had slathered some butter on the bread.  Either way, she was ravenous. Wolfing it down, Estela tiptoed quietly down the stairs for a drink.  Turning the corner, she was relieved to see Declan asleep on the couch.

Thank God.

Quietly getting a soda and a bag of chips she went back upstairs. And then she noticed it. She wondered how it had skipped her attention before. Perhaps because she was so happy to be back home? Or maybe because Declan’s presence occupied too many of her senses?  Deciding it was probably both of those things; Estela set her drink and bag of chips on her desk.  Then she went to work. Collecting all of the frames that had pictures of Abby, she began to remove the pictures and toss them in the bin.  Next, she took down the photos that were taped above her desk and finally, she tore down the huge poster of One Direction from the ceiling that Abby had given her as a present a few years ago.

Feeling cleansed after purging her environment from all traces of Abby, she ate the bag of chips and drank the soda.  Soon she was fast asleep, comfortably tucked in her bed.

In the neighboring town, two men huddled over the computer screen, panicking at what they had just seen.

The blasted girl had destroyed everything.

“Teenagers!” The muscular man spat as they helplessly watched the girl tear down their eyes and ears.

The image of the bedroom disappeared and all they could hear was the scrunching sound of paper followed by muffled crunching.

“What the heck is that sound?” The other man asked.

“The girl is eating her chips, you fool.” He answered.

“What are we going to do now, Sir?”

“Stay here. If you hear anything let me know.” The muscular man said as he prepared to leave.

Morning came faster than she would have liked.  It wasn’t the chirping birds that woke her, or an annoying Declan. In fact, it was the loud pounding on the front door that jolted her awake.

‘Stay where you are, Estela. I’m going to see who it is.’ Declan said through the mind-link.

Walking to the door, Declan put his eye to the keyhole. The friendly face of Diego met his eye.

“Morning, Diego.” He greeted, opening the door and letting him in.

“Morning.” He said and stepped in.

Following him into the house was his sister Mia.

“Mia.” Declan greeted.

“Hi Declan,” She flirted. “I’m here to help Estela get ready for her trip.”

Estela, who could hear the conversation clearly, cringed. What was she doing here? She had always been a bully and had made her life hell at school.

“She’s upstairs.” Declan said.

As Mia began to make her way up the stairs Declan turned to Diego and asked if he could leave now that Mia was here.

“You can, I’ll stay until Estela is ready to leave.” He replied.

“Thank you, Diego.” Declan said making a beeline for the door.

“Aren’t you going to say goodbye to her?” Diego asked confused.

“To whom?”

“Estela, of course.”

“Nah. She is nervous as it is. I don’t want to freak her out.” He lied.

Upstairs, Estela tried to ignore the pang of sadness that she felt at Declan’s remark. Very quickly the sadness turned to anger. She forced it out of her mind as she saw Mia’s smiling face ascending the stairs.

“Hi!” Mia greeted, a big grin on her face.

“Hello.” Estela offered, warily.

“So, what happened in here?” Mia asked eyeing the ripped photographs that lay on the floor around the bin.

“Spring cleaning.” Estela replied.

“It’s not Spring.” Mia countered. Seeing that Estela wasn’t going to reply she began to pick all the ripped pictures from the floor and deposited them in the bin. “We are going to need this. Where can I empty the garbage? Do you recycle?”

“I’ll do it.” Estela said grabbing the bin. She walked to her father’s study and pulled a chair to the shredding machine. Sitting down, she began to shred all the memories that she had shared with Abby, happy that the task would keep her away from Mia.

The sound of the shredding machine filled the ears of the lone man who sat watching a blank screen in the neighboring town. He hoped that the girl wouldn’t shred the poster. He waited, and listened to the awful sound amplified by the speakers that they had linked the microphone too. He was too scared to turn the volume down lest he miss some important information.

After about half an hour of listening to the shredding he was put out of his misery. The beautiful sound of silence filled his room. He panicked. The girl had done it. She had managed to shred the poster. Crap!

He passed the news to his superior through their mindlink. And then he walked out the back door of the cabin, shifted into his wolf form and ran towards Estela’s house.
