"Am I really ready?" I asked myself, a wave of uncertainty washing over me.

"Alex, the good news is that I got promoted to country B as a team leader," James spoke, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

For a brief moment, I was taken aback. I had thought he was about to propose to me. Instead, he pulled out an offer letter and placed it in my palm.

"Alex, this promotion brings me one step closer to my dreams. I have been selected to lead a team in a foreign country. Isn't it a great opportunity? I'll be promoted as the office head, and I plan on leaving in a few months," he explained, his voice filled with enthusiasm.

As James shared his achievement, I felt a mix of emotions swirling within me. It was a confusing blend of sadness, frustration, and perhaps even relief that I wasn't ready for a relationship at this moment. The sting of rejection was difficult to bear, especially after holding onto the hope of being in a relationship for the past three years.

Part of me wanted to be genuinely happy for James, to share in his excitement and celebrate his success. Yet, deep down, I couldn't ignore the overwhelming feeling of being rejected once again. It weighed heavily on my heart, casting a shadow of disappointment and self-doubt.

"I wasn't meant to be from the start," I thought to myself, silently concealing my emotions and applauding James' happiness. "Alex, there's one more thing I want to tell you," he began, reaching out to grab my hand, but his phone suddenly rang, interrupting our moment.

"Alex, just a second, it's a call from a client in the other country. I'll be right back," he said, excusing himself to take the call. As I waited for James to return so we could leave, a waiter approached our table and served a carrot cake pastry without us ordering it.

"Wait, we didn't order this," I called after the waiter, but he quickly disappeared into the crowd. I stared at the cake, surprised to see that it was my favorite. How did James know? It brought a small sense of relief amidst my lingering disappointment.

"What does he want to say now?" I wondered, my curiosity piqued.

"Alex," James finally returned, a sense of urgency in his voice. "I have to leave urgently." He swiftly grabbed his bag and motioned for me to get into a taxi, leaving behind the half-eaten pastry on the table.

As we rushed back, I couldn't shake off the feeling of intrigue. There was something peculiar about James' behavior and the sudden urgency. Little did I know, events were unfolding behind the scenes that would soon change the course of my life.

Meanwhile, in a different location, a man in a black suit and luxurious attire was being attended to by a waiter. He handed over a bundle of notes, casually dismissing the waiter. It was Mr. Thomas, a figure from my past, whose presence sent shivers down my spine.

"Mr. Thomas, we have asked Crystal's team leader to fly to our office in country B on an urgent basis," a man appeared before him, delivering the news.

"Good job, you may leave," Mr. Thomas replied, his voice tinged with a sinister smirk.

"Alex, it's been three years, and I am eager to meet you," he muttered to himself, his eyes gleaming with a mix of anticipation and malevolence. Little did I know, our paths were about to intertwine once again, and the mysteries of the past would resurface, bringing with them a whirlwind of emotions and unforeseen consequences.
