4. UNNATURAL PHENOMENON

Gym sucked. But gym always sucked. Why wouldn't the coach just let me do track? I was sick of getting balls to the face.

Today I was eager to race out of the gym for two reasons. Getting away from team sports before I could cause anymore accidents, and getting into my truck before different kinds of balls started flying.

The air outside was crisp compared to the sweaty gymnasium and locker rooms, and I was thankful there was no wind blowing, or it would have been even colder. Already people were gathering by the front steps of the school, amped for the oncoming fight. The last thing I wanted right now was to be pelted with freezing cold spheres of ice.

I shivered just at the thought, and tugged my jacket tighter and higher around me as I hurried through the lot, careful not to slip over the thick sheet of ice that'd formed over the asphalt. It was looking hazardous. I was going to have to be careful driving home.

There were other cars already moving, heading out of the parking lot early too. I guess I wasn't the only one who didn't want to participate in the snowball fight.

Cullen and his pixie sister and brother Jasper were walking a few feet in front of me, and stopped together at their car; which I had to pass on the way to my truck. Though I willed them with my mind to just get into their car so I could skirt past unnoticed, they didn't, instead standing around the front of the car chatting while waiting for the other two to arrive.

I tried to hurry past, slipping between two other cars to avoid them, but Edward's head turned as if he sensed I was there, and when our eyes met he smiled, so I smiled back; but didn't stop to chat, because his brother was scowling at me.

I hurried across the road to my vehicle, trying to yank my keys out of my pocket as I went, because Edward was right there and I had humiliated myself enough around him already.

The sounds of the snowball fight beginning reached me, and I felt my blood race with fear. I had to hurry before they tried to drag me in too, or Meagan tried to get me to hang around and watch.

"Stupid keys," I muttered, really struggling with them. They appeared to be caught on something inside my pocket. I gave them one big yank and heard something rip, right as I reached the bed of my truck. My keys went flying out of my pocket – and my hand – hit the back of my truck with a loud clang, and then flew across the ice and under the back of the car parked to my left.

Just my luck.

I could see them sitting on the ground just behind the back tyre, so I got down on my knees to look for them under the vehicle. Thankful I was wearing my gloves, I felt around on the ice until my fingers latched onto my keys with a jingle of metal.

Before I could even pull them out, there was suddenly this high-pitched screech – very quickly getting louder – and I looked up, startled; still bent over and hand still outstretched for my keys.

I saw several things at once. Nothing was moving in slow-motion, like in the movies. Instead, it was as if the panic fuelled adrenaline that suddenly rushed through my body allowed my brain to take things in faster.

The first thing I noticed was Edward Cullen's face. He was still standing by his car with his brother and sister, but was looking at me with the most horrified expression. Like he'd just seen something tragic and gruesome.

The second thing I saw was the source of the noise. There was a large dark blue van spiralling out of control on the ice in the car park, barrelling right towards me with it's tyres locked up tight. It was moving way too fast, was gunning right for me, and I wasn't going to be able to get out of the way in time. It was going to crush me against the back of this car, and there was nothing I could do about it.
