THE VANDERWAALS HAD BEEN haunted for centuries, ever since Katerina Petrova escaped Klaus' clutches, that's when the ghosts started to appear. That was the turning point, that one moment in history that can be pinpointed as the start of it all.
Erin Vanderwaal has seen ghosts ever since she was four years old, once she blew out her birthday candles she saw her first "imaginary friend" as her mother called them. Her mother was unaware of the curse, her father who was left as soon as he fathered a child, too scared to see the broken result.
For he knew of the curse that plagued the neighbours of the Petrova's, all because his family were in the wrong place at the wrong time in the fourteenth century.
And to add fuel to the fire, Klaus Mikaelson wanted each alive Vanderwaal for an unknown reason that revolved around the Sun and Moon curse.
And so, Eric Vanderwaal abandoned his daughter when she was a baby, praying she didn't inherit the crazy gene.
His prayers weren't heard.
Instead, his daughter repressed that part of herself, but when two mysterious brothers came to town she started to feel as though her resolve was slipping, as though she were going mad.
Especially when Elena told her that she is the key to everything. That wasn't Elena Gilbert, was it? Nope. Katherine Pierce. Katerina Petrova. The one who got Erin's family cursed. The one who set caution to the wind and set off a spiral of events.
And when Erin finds out the truth? Well, let's just say that it won't end well.

— the love interest for erin is up to you, but some good ideas would be klaus, damon, stefan, katherine, elena or any other character you see fit (or she doesn't need one if you don't want !!)
— erin grew up in mystic falls, she might've crossed paths with elena, caroline, bonnie, matt or tyler but she most likely won't be close with them (maybe like friends who are low maintenance but nothing like besties forever, yk?)
— erin's father left, as mentioned, but was murdered by elijah so that klaus couldn't get to him (erin can find out about this at some point or instead you may change it so this is a plot point in the story like when isobel died)
— erin's powers consist of her being able to communicate with ghosts, being able to cross over into the other side (she can't cross into hell or peace or limbo or anything), being needed for Sun and Moon curse
— erin's ancestors were cursed by a witch when katherine left for england, it was as they made a deal with the witches to ensure she stayed in return for their minds. which is why they are bound to the other side, cursed to lose their minds.
— the vanderwaals are needed in the sun and moon curse as the witches did a number on klaus and made it so that the doppelgänger won't die in the ritual unless they have one of the vanderwaals killed too
— erin will most likely think she's crazy, she sees ghosts, mkay? like what teenage girl does that?
— erin's character is up to you, though i'd go for a shy type personality, through her childhood she didn't need friends as she had the ghosts of the other side. which would explain her social anxiety, but if you want to portray her differently please do
— erin's mother knows nothing of the supernatural, neither does she
— throughout the story, you could give erin a character development by showing her getting more confident (if you chose to say she was timid)
— katherine will try to use erin in the ritual, and most likely when erin knows everything then she will hate katherine (i can see the enemies to lovers already)
— you could start off the book with when damon and elena go to isobel's study and read up on werewolves, you could create a scene where it's them finding out about the Vanderwaals and then start it with that and being all mysterious before moving to erin's pov (or that could be like a prologue or smth)
— erin will be a part of the ritual, since she is bound to the other side she will have the choice to come back and will
— you can start the story at anywhere during season two really
