A Kingdom of Candles

Rui slowly blinked awake, momentarily confused to find soft bedding underneath him instead of his cold, wooden desk.

Oh, right, he was at Mizuki's place.

Rui yawned and sat up, stretching. Rui then turned his attention toward the nightstand, looking for his hat. He felt his chest constrict as he realized it wasn't there.

Rui took a deep breath and walked into the bathroom, breathing a sigh of relief as he found his hat on the countertop.

As he reached for his hat, Rui caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror. His purple hair was an absolute mess, falling over his eye, and strands of hair scattered everywhere, accented by cyan strands. There were pretty bad bags under his eyes, though Rui didn't feel tired. What caught Rui's attention was his flame floating idly above his head: A bright purple color that made him stick out like a sore thumb compared to the other people he knew.

Rui quickly hid his flame underneath his top hat and went downstairs.

"Good morning, sleepyhead!" Mizuki chirped when Rui entered their dining room.

"I'm not a sleepyhead," Rui shook his head, a faint cat-like smile on his face.

"You literally fell asleep super early yesterday." Mizuki rolled their eyes. "Not a sleepyhead, my butt."

"Anyone would after traveling nonstop for two days." Rui retorted with an eye-roll, sitting down across from Mizuki at the table.

"Touche," Mizuki chuckled. "How did you sleep anyways?"

"Pretty good for once, actually," Rui said. "Your bed was comfy."

"Good. I'm glad." Mizuki smiled. "Anyways, did you think of how you're gonna convince the Queen to unban magic?"

"Not yet, unfortunately." Rui sighed.

"Dang. I really wanted to see one of your shows today." Mizuki sighed. "Promise to show me one after you succeed in your quest?"

"I promise." Rui said.
