Act II-Scene I: "Grocery Shopping at Your Convenience, but Not Mine."

Two months had gone by since I started living with Ms. Hattie (even though she insisted on me calling her Nonna), and we managed to work out an agreement. I would be living under her roof, like the granddaughter she's always wanted, and she'd provide me with all my necessities and spoil me rotten (despite my open hesitation for her doing so). The context of what I needed to do were fairly simple:

1.)Feed the cats
2.)Dust and organize the house
3.)Feed the cats
4.)Clean the yard
5.)Feed the cats

Surprisingly enough, this process always took a large majority of the day, but I'd still end up having time to myself in the end anyways, so I wasn't going to complain. During my spare time I found myself looking through her old vintage books. Although it wasn't much, there was certainly a large variety. Hattie eventually found out about my gravitational pull towards reading and found it adorable. So when she transformed the guest bedroom into my room, she made sure to add in large shelves and a few books she'd thought I'd like.
I was surprised when she showed me. In all my life I couldn't remember the last time someone had done anything that nice for me out of the kindness of their heart. I truly enjoyed Hattie's gift. I remember squeezing her so hard that day that I thought I'd accidentally snap her arms off. She brushed it off though like it was nothing and insisted it was the least she could do. She also took me shopping for clothes and asserted that I needed new ones. I couldn't really stop her from almost buying out a third of the store even though I tried convincing her that I wouldn't need so many, but she's a hard woman to please. Eight hundred dollars later and we were on our way back to her humble home with many bags around our arms from the mall.
During the days, when Hattie is out at her job (since her employer suggested she retired, but couldn't when she convinced them that she needed to keep busy), there would usually be occasions where, once or twice a week, she would ask me to go grocery shopping for food, or she'd lend me some spending money to give me something to do, and I'd go walking around Gotham to cure my boredom.
It was an easy-to-follow routine and both of us were content with it.
In the beginning, I had no choice but to tell her who I was through my heavy clothes. She finally understood why I was so hesitant to share anything personal with her in the beginning. Hattie was surprisingly lenient with the idea and even went as far as to say she'd hide me from the cops if she had to (which I was thankful for).

Ms. Hattie was about to leave for work when she turned around to meet me at the front door before she left. "If it's not too much trouble, dear, I'd like you to go out and pick up a few things from the store. There's a list with some money on the kitchen counter," she said, "I even left a few extra bills in there so you could buy something nice for yourself." I shook my head with a smile.
"You're too nice to me Ms. Hattie."
"Nonsense, dear."
She waved me off as she parted out the door for the day. I stayed a minute to watch her car leave from the driveway before getting started on my chores. I followed the mental list I made for myself, like usual, starting with feeding the cats and going from there.

Before I knew it, everything was done. I didn't know if it was just me or if I had gotten faster at completing them, but it allowed me more time for shopping. I grabbed the money from off the kitchen counter, drew my hood and scarf over my face, and kicked on my shoes to head out the door. The sky was clear and the day was slightly chilly, so hopefully I wouldn't get as many weird stares today for wearing heavy clothing in questionable weather. I made my way down the main streets of Gotham city and navigated to the nearest shop that Hattie always seemed keen on buying from. On my way there, I was stuck in my own mind thinking about the few months prior to when I visited The Humble Study. I was planning on visiting again after my trip to the store, but ultimately remembered the altercation I had with Damien Wayne and Alfred. That alone had me steering clear of there, despite my obvious yearning to go back.
