~chapter twelve~
"So will you tell me what you were talking about?" Dario asked while he started the Rakmobil's engine. Andy just smiled." Not your business, that's our business." "You're already one who can end up with girls what?" " Did you think I was just a stalk of celery?"
The road was now sloping down to the level, which then up to the sea led. A light fresh breeze carried the smell of salt here. ''She even gave you something. What is it? A gift?"
Andy lifted his head. "Yes, it's a gift, but that's none of your business."
"Come on, don't be so pretentious. We're friends, aren't we?" Dario tried to see something in the tightly clenched fist. ''Is it something blue? I see blue there. Come on, tell me what it is." Andy dropped his head again and stared silently in front of him.
At the far end of the horizon, the contours of the plain dissolved into the bluish haze of the narrow strip of sky. "Do you know what my mother says? Blue is the color of calm. That means if you like blue you're a quiet guy." Dario shook his head. ''I think that's nonsense. For example, in English, blue, the word for blue, also means sad. So does that mean, if you're English and you like blue, that you are a quiet, sad type?" Dario looked down the road and then at the thin line of sea on the horizon.
"Do you know what blue means to me?' he finally said. “It's the color of something you can't reach. Take the sky for example. The sky is blue and can you reach it? The sea is blue too, but you can't really reach that either, because when you get there you realize that the blue isn't there, it's further back, it's somewhere in front of you, far away from where you are standing.” He made a sweeping gesture with one hand. “That's what blue is. The color of something that is always further away than what you can reach
He slowed down. The engine slowed. Andy was lost in the music again and allowed himself to be ren, very calm, with a smile on his face, although he didn't even know where he was going.
And Dario? Did Dario know where it was going? To Torre Saracena? An undefined place somewhere back in this plane, shrouded in a haze the color of things that cannot be reached?
But this time he had decided, finally he had decided something himself. For once he had prevailed against everyone, and now he was free and could determine his own life. The stronger wins and the weaker has to retreat and leave the pack: that's how it works in the animal kingdom. And then why had he left while everyone else stayed were?
Dario looked up at the sun, which shone overhead in its usual peaceful indifference." Do you know what the truth is, Andy?' he asked. “The absolute
Truth? A bunch of squirreled nonsense. Exactly, that's the truth." His voice got louder The blue, the sky, the sun are just a bunch of nonsense! If not, tell me what we're doing on this fucking wheelchair in the middle of this fucking plain?" He spread his arms, releasing the throttle. The wheelchair lurched forward and the engine stopped he yelled at the sky, the sun, the sea,he yelled at Andy, Torre Saracena, everything around him.
His voice echoed around the hills and came back hoarse and broken, dying away like a sob. A bird answered him from the plain. Squinting, Dario listened to the world that had been forced, at least for a moment, tobhear. He felt tears pressing against his lids from inside, but he was Darius the Great, and the great do not weep. But the tears didn't care about that rule. And gushing out like spring water. In the meantime, silence had returned all around. The echo of his scream had dissipated in an instant, as if it had never been.
