Cendrillon

Mina sighed airily, running her hands through her hair with a faint frown. After she had dealt with the onyx locks to her satisfaction, she placed her crown gently upon her head. Of course, all this preparation would be useless when she needed to make a break from that ball. Well, perhaps she'll look nice enough for however long she needed to stick around. Tensi certainly wouldn't be happy if she spent too long there.

"Mina! Come on, you're taking so long! Am I gonna have to have my grave dug for me for when I die of old age?"

Mina rolled her eyes. "Yes, yes, Icarus. Calm down."

She lifted her dress skirt for a moment to descend the stairs, greeted by a few blushing figures. What a pity they didn't know what she had to do. They would never want to see her again.

"Minaa~!" Iosnoi rushed over, fussing over the arsenic girl's askew garments. "You look so pretty! Alito did right by getting a dress for you!"

She chuckled at the robot's antics. "Ah, thank you, Iosnoi... So do you. Suits you very well."

The younger girl grinned. "Thank you!"

Icarus sighed quietly, brushing her golden hair out of her face. "Can we go...?"

"Can't wait to see Tohma?"

"Shut up, bot! Shut your loud, secret spewing mouth!"

"Hehe~! You know it's true."

"I- that doesn't mean you can screech it to the four corners of this planet!"

Mina clasped her hands together. "Shall we?"

"Let's go." Icarus huffed and pushed past her, being the first out the door in her mini-fit.

Mina frowned slightly. "No need to be harsh." She was the next out, making a beeline for the portal nearby and stepping in.

On the other side, everything was a loud, hustling mess. People dashing from one side to the other, Merant eating all the free desserts, and everyone else talking rather loudly to each other. Maybe this is just the norm for Galichron's royal balls.

Icarus was immediately dragged off by the Golden queen, Ihara. Iosnoi disappeared somewhere as well, it seems, leaving Mina on her own. 'Hm. I suppose all is for the best.'

A rather unfamiliar but familiar pink-haired male seemed to be making hurried last minute changes to music and the like. As soon as he turned, Mina recognized him as Nix, the planet's representative and time-obsessed historical records keeper. He looked unbelievably royal.

"Can't you get it working!? T-the event started three minutes ago!" Typical Nix.

Mina approached, a small smile on her face and light, fluttery feeling inside. "Nix, I'm fairly sure you're the only individual keeping track of every minute that passes."

The man jumped, turning quickly. "O-oh?" He smiled happily at the sight of her. "Mina! You made it!"

"Only because Alito forced me-"

"Well you're gonna have a great time, I promise!"

'No I won't.' She nodded. "I'm sure I will."

"Great!" His happiness was really just so innocent. Unassuming.

A couple of hours passed, and the music had come in full swing. Mina had been chatting away with Iosnoi rather contently, since the girl was so easy to speak with.

"Speaking of, have you got a date?"

"Oh, me? Haha, no, of course not! I suspect yours is Nix!"

"Hush! Isn't this the second time you've spewed someone's secrets!?" Mina hissed.

"I think so! Oh look, there he is. He's coming over here~!"

"What-!? O-oh, hello again, Nix."

"Hiya Mina~! Are you having fun?"

"Well... I suppose so. You were right." She put on a small smile.

Nix clasped his gloved hands together as certain music began to play. "Oh, this one's nice! Would you like to dance with me?" He extended a hand in invitation, grinning widely with faint peach dusting his cheeks.

Mina colored a light gold. "Dance...? Well... I suppose..." She accepted his invitation by sliding her hand in his and he led her out to the middle of the floor where he rested one hand on her side to help start.

Nix hummed along quietly to the music, practically radiating happiness and innocence. Didn't he always, though? Mina's eyes welled up with tears and she looked away quickly, quietly sniffing.

"...Are you alright? Mina, are you upset?" She shook her head.

"No... No, it's fine. It doesn't matter."

"You're crying... I... I don't want you to be sad." His smile fell from his face in concern, only upsetting her further.

"It's fine...!"

"Please tell me what's wrong..."

She looked up at him, a few tears finally falling. "I can't."

He moved one hand up to cup her face, using his gloved thumb to wipe away the liquid. "Why not?" His velvet pink eyes were no longer joyful, rather, worried.

"I just... I just can't." One of her hands gravitated toward her thigh but she was unlucky enough for him to look down.

"What are you doing...?"

"I loved you, Nix."

"Mina- Mina, what are you doing? What are you saying? I feel the same, I really do, but why are you-"

"I'm so sorry."

"Mina-!?"

She stepped forward, one arm around his neck in a sort of embrace while her other hand slid a knife out of its sheath. "I'm sorry..." With a fluid motion, she drove the knife into his chest and broke off, throwing the main doors open and sprinting out of the room. She spared just one glance back after hearing a quiet thump.

She saw his smile. Not betrayed, not upset. Happy. Like his one wish in the world came true.

Nix had fallen to his knees, the arsenic in the blade having spread through his surrounding bloodstream. He had one hand pressed to his chest and the other supporting him. A small smile graced his features despite his expression being full of pain. He took his last actions to be in words that Mina only ran from, running down the glistening stairway and off into the darkness as streams of guilty and despaired tears fell down her face. The ebony knife lay discarded on the pearl quartz steps. He couldn't know. He couldn't know. And he would never know.

"I don't care for why. I'm just happy we got to dance."

Nix's last wish had been granted.
