The door bell rang. Anu shook her head.
"Finally. Is this the time to come home? You were supposed to be back by 8:30 pm", she said, opening the door.
"I'm sorry, love," Sumi said, her tired eyes full of guilt.
"It's midnight!", Anu said, slightly annoyed, ushering her wife in. "We had a dinner date, remember?"
Sumi pouted slightly. "I remember, I remember. I had wrapped up all my work by eight. But then some old guy had a heart attack and the senior doctor thought it was a golden opportunity to teach the interns how to handle emergencies. I even got to use a defibrillator!", she said enthusiastically.
"Those electric shock thingies they show in movies?", Anu asked, amused by Sumi's excitement.
Sumi laughed. "Yup", she said, "the old guy is out of danger now".
"I forgive you", Anu smiled. She reached out for a hug.
"Nooooo", Sumi cried. "I'm covered in all sorts of pathogens from the hospital. No hugs until I take a bath".
Anu giggled. "Fine", she said.
"Where are Ma, Baba, Uncle and Auntie?", Sumi asked, looking around.
"Stop calling them Uncle and Auntie now. They're your parents as well," Anu reminded.
" Fiiiine, where are my two sets of parents?", Sumi whined.
Anu chuckled. "Well, I came home at six and waited for you till nine. Then, when you didn't come, I guessed you would be late. So I made dinner and they all went to bed early", said Anu.
"I'm sorry you had to work so hard because of me", Sumi sighed.
"It's okay, baby. Go freshen up, I'll set the table," Anu smiled.
"Right", Sumi walked towards their bedroom. Anu slyly stretched her arms out to hug Sumi's back.
Before she could touch her, however, Sumi turned around and wedged her backpack between their bodies at the speed of a viper striking a hapless rat.
"Hugs include back hugs too", Sumi laughed.
Anu raised her hands in surrender. "You got me".

"How was your day? Any interesting cases?", Sumi asked, taking a chapati out of the steel casserole.
"Well, Mr Sen said I'm still too inexperienced to present in court," Anu rolled her eyes. "All I get to do is paperwork. Stacks and stacks of paperwork. It's so boooooring," she complained.
"Aww. I'm pretty sure you'll get to present in court soon. And I'll attend your first hearing", Sumi consoled her.
"Promise?", Anu's eyes sparkled with joy.
Without a hint of hesitation, Sumi smiled and said,
"I promise."*********
"Aaaand done", Sumi sighed with relief. "Cleaning the dining table, check. Wiping the counters and stove, check. Sweeping the kitchen floor, check", Sumi ticked off her mental to-do checklist.
"Just a few more", Anu said, washing the dishes, beads of sweat clinging from her forehead.
Sumi wiped her hands with a dish cloth.
"Oh my god, stop it", Anu giggled, as she felt Sumi's hands wrap around her waist. Sumi peppered kissed down her nape, as her nimble hands stealthily made their way under her kurti.
"Everyone's asleep", Sumi whispered, and bit her earlobe, teasing her. Anu leaned back into her wife's arms. A soft moan escaped her lips, as Sumi sucked the sweet spot on her neck, her hands fondling her breasts. Not wearing a bra was an excellent decision.
"Ahem", Anu's mother coughed. "I can't find the water tumblers anywhere".
Anu and Sumi sprang apart. Blushing like a ripe tomato, Sumi stuttered, "Anu is w-washing them". She wiped one of the newly washed tumblers with the dish cloth and gave it to her.
"Here, Aun-", Anu elbowed her, "-I mean, Mom."
Mrs Roy giggled like a schoolgirl. "I wonder how you young people forget that you have your own room to do all the hanky-panky you want without anyone walking in on you. But I can't judge you either, I have my very own list of shenanigans that could make anyone blush," she reminisced. "I remember, Anu, when we were young, your dad and I used to-"
"Nooooo," Anu cried, horrified, and covered her ears. "I don't want to know what you and dad did when you were young, spare me please", she pleaded.
Mrs Roy chuckled. "Your loss", she said, and filled the tumbler from the copper jug.
"Goodnight lovebirds", she winked, and strutted back to her room.
Anu and Sumi looked at each others faces, and burst into peals of laughter. They laughed and laughed, until they couldn't breathe anymore.
"Get out of my kitchen, now", Anu said firmly, after they had recovered from their laughing fit.
"It's our kitchen", Sumi pointed out.
"Ms Sumitra Das Ganguly", Anu said, stressing on each word, "you can't cook to save your life! Go to bed, right now."
Sumi pinched both her ear lobes and stuck her tongue out.
" I'm sorry, I was just trying to help!""You've done enough helping. Now, out!", Anu said, trying not to crack a smile.
"Yes, yes lawyer sahiba, I can't win in a battle of words with you", Sumi scoffed. "I will listen to you, like the good little girl that I am, lie on the bed and wait patiently for my sexy wife, my legs spread and naked as the day I was bor-"
Anu threw the dirty, wet dish scrubber at Sumi, and it hit her squarely in the middle of her face before she could finish that obnoxious sentence.
Perfect shot. It would be very unlike Anu if she missed.
