"So? How did it go?" My mom's excited voice hit me first thing as soon as I stepped into our house. Was she waiting for me?
"Fine, I guess," I said with a silver of disinterest, avoiding eye contact.
I put my purse on the table and took off my shoes, entering the threshold, the smell of lilac room freshener wafting through the hallway.
"How do you feel right now?" She followed me to the stairs, her eyes sparkling.
I stopped and stared at her straight in the eyes.
"Still gay." I deadpanned, turning away, and continued walking upstairs to my room.
Her smile faltered.
You might be wondering what's happening.
Well, it's sorta complicated.
The thing is, I'm a lesbian, and recently, I came out to my mom. She was accepting at first. Maybe she thought it was a joke or something.
Though, just after a few days, she asked when I was going to get a boyfriend since I'm already 20. A boyfriend.
Of course, I called her out on this, saying she should consider my feelings too, but since then our relationship has gotten kind of rocky. She often made remarks which could be considered homophobic about me, but I didn't say anything, since she's the only family I have, and i believed we'd cross this bridge, like we've done so many times.
Last week she asked me to do just one last thing for her, and then she would leave my love life alone, or so I hoped.
She wanted me to go on a blind date with a man of her choosing, and if I was still not straight by the end of it, she wouldn't bother me about this again.
Well, today was that day, and I'm pretty sure she was hoping for me to change my sexuality in a heartbeat after looking at him. Lol.
To be honest, I didn't even go meet him. I had no reason to. Why? Because I hate men and I hate wasting my time. Period.
I could feel my mom stopping in her tracks behind me, and I glanced back to take a look at her. She looked dead serious, and wouldn't meet my eyes. My step faltered, stopping just outside the door to my room.
"So, it has come to this."
I raised an eyebrow at her, biting back an immature chuckle at the seriousness of her tone. One thing about me was you couldn't pay me to be serious in situations that warranted seriousness.
"What?"
She sighed and looked up, and my eyes locked with her tired looking ones.
"I'm sorry, Jia, but I'm afraid you will have to do one last thing for me."
"What is it?" I asked with my brows tugged together in concern.
Don't tell me she was gonna surprise me with marriage papers or something like that. The last thing on my list was ending up in a shitty Wattpad drama book where I'm in a toxic relationship and even the readers hate me. Strike that, it's not on my list at all.
She quirked up the corners of her mouth in a smile, her dimple on the left side making an appearance as she walked towards me. "Let's go out for dinner tonight."
I felt nervous, since the last time I witnessed this 'professional' smile was when I was 16 and got caught making out with my high school tutor, Saki, in her room, and my mother had to come smooth over things with her family (at that time, it was just an act of rebellion, but who would've thought I'd grow up to be a professional girl-kisser?), but most of all, I was dumbfounded. Why would she be sorry for asking me out to dinner?
