Origin:

They are the result of possessions. The witches, being the most connected to the spirit world, are able to communicate and, at extension, summon spirits. These are some of the darkest spirits, with the only purpose of creating havoc. When summoned, they can either possess completely a person, or make a deal with them.

The first ever registered case, dates to around the 1,500 AD. When an English witch was being stalked by a spirit. The spirit pretended to be benign and convinced the witch to perform a summoning ritual. After being summoned, the spirit took possession of the witch, darkening her blue eyes and blond hair. Since then, the ritual to summon them it's been known to witches who practice dark magic; they can either summon them for themselves or to curse another.

Once firstly possessed, the Barghest will only be a constant presence in the vessel's mind, darkening their thoughts, it would only manifest in physical form on the full moons. They would make the vessel's body shift, taking the form of a dog-like skeleton, letting its bloodlust take over.

With time, and after each kill, the Barghest's physical shape changes; they grow in size, their bones start to cover themselves with muscle and meat, until growing a skin, tough and gray. And, when they exceed reach their final growing stages, dark mist starts to surround them; either totally possessing their vessel, or granting them their shape through a deal, the Barghest will be able to shift voluntarily.
