Day Thirteen
Instantly jolting awake, I feverishly rubbed Taco from side to side, trying to wake her up.
It was the last and final battle of the apocalypse, and maybe our last and final day of hiding.
"Get up, Taco!" I yelled, rocking her hurriedly.
She slowly sat up, looking tired as ever.
"What is it, Balloon? I'm still sleepy." I frowned at her.
"I know, but there's no time for that right now!"
She pouted and crossed her arms. I grabbed the portable AC and our backpacks. "What are you doing?! We have to leave!"
I yanked on Taco's hand, heading toward the exit..if there was one. According to OJ, there was a secret trapdoor if we needed to get out in a jiffy.
Hopefully he was right, though.
She huffed angrily. "Balloon, where are we even going?!"
I rolled my eyes in annoyance. "To the exit, obviously."
"There is no exit!" Taco exclaimed.
Just calm down.
I frowned. "Don't be so negative. We'll find a way."
Somehow.
She instantly looked meek.
In a way it serves you right.
{crash!!}
We both jumped at the sudden sound, terribly startled.
{booming!} Taco's eyes widened. "Uhh, what were those?!"
I hope those weren't gunshots. That would be terrible.
{screaming}
Huh?
"Open up," a startling voice bellowed from the outside. "Or else!"
Taco and I hurriedly packed our backpacks, and she carried the AC with her.
"Thanks for that," She looked at me, her eyes wider than usual. "I appreciate it."
She reddened slightly, and I smiled in return.
"Heh, it's nothing, really, Balloon. You mean a lot to m----"
{banging}
"Open the door or we'll shoot!!"
Taco paled in alarm, and I deflated slightly.
"What do we do now?" she muttered in annoyance.
I groaned in anger.
"I don't know!!" Taco frowned deeply at me, and my cheeks burned with embarrassment.
I'd glanced at the tinted window, and that was all the confirmation I needed.
"Hey! Why don't we try escaping through that window?" Taco made an uneasy face, but nodded.
"Alright. Let's try it."
We rushed over towards the dark window and attempted to open its latch.
{click!}
Yes!!
Taco and I high-fived each other proudly.
"Thank goodness," she said. "Now let's go--"
We carefully climbed through the window, trying not to get shot or murdered.
{yelling} {mutters}
{bang!!!}
Yeesh, why is the battle so deafening? It's ringing through my head.
Taco and I bolted as quickly as possible. She glanced at me in a worrisome manner, but I smiled back despite feeling scared and anxious.
A Few Hours Later..
It seemed like we were running for eternity, but it wasn't the case. Taco was feeling weak ever since we left, but thankfully we found another place to lay low: a basement; opposed to our "safe room."
Taco suddenly dropped to the floor. I kneeled right next to her, placing my hand on hers. "Are you tired?" I asked gently.
She nodded faintly. "Yes. Very tired. Could we take a break, Balloon? Please?"
I nodded. "Sure. It's been another wild day."But I think my heart's even wilder..
The two of us set our backpacks down near a gigantic fan.
"I still want to keep the AC with us," I said, plugging it up. "Just in case."
Taco nodded in confirmation. "Okay."
Sitting on my cot, I closed my eyes and tried to fall asleep.
"I wish we could've eaten," Taco says, completely out of the blue. "I'm hungry."
Me too, actually.
I opened my eyes, and glanced at her. "Alright then."
{rummaging}
"Here."
Handing Taco her backpack, I unzipped mine, taking out a sandwich.
This is so refreshing.
Taco smiled warmly as she ate an apple.
She turned to me with a smile on her face. "Thank you, Balloon." Taco said, her voice low. I nodded, my smile hiding the worries in my heart.
"It's nothing, Taco. You mean a lot to me. You're-"
{rumble}
Her eyes widened. "Uh, what was that?!"
I looked up at the ceiling and frowned.
"Uh oh.."
"Huh? What's wrong?" Taco politely demanded.
"I think the roof is caving in."
{crumbling}
!!!
Oh no.
Taco and I exhange troubled glances.
{Crash!!}
...?!?!
"Balloon!!"
Huh--?
Where's Taco?
"Taco?" I asked, extremely uneasy.
"I'm here," a British voice rang out to me. "On the other side, that is."
I frowned with dread forming in my heart.
And just like that, me and Taco were separated.
