At the edge of the cliff, overlooking the ocean, illuminated by the stars of the night sky, stood a fair-skinned young girl with silver eyes and neck-length black hair with red tips.

She wore a black long-sleeved blouse with a high collar and red trim on the sleeves, over which was a black waist cincher with red lacing up the front, and a matching skirt with red lining. She also wore a pair of thick black stockings and black combat boots with red laces, red trims around the top, and red soles.

Her outfit was topped by a red hooded cloak fastened at her throat. A large silver cross was used as a buckle on her wide black belt, which was slung around her hips on an angle. Attached to her belt were a pocket and a row of bullets.

Ruby Rose pulled the hood back over her head, smiling down at the gravestone that sat before her. Even as she turned away from the grave, the words written on the grave were still in her mind.

"Summer Rose
Thus Kindly I Scatter"

Ruby was around two years old when her mother passed away. Nobody knew how she had passed away. She had simply vanished during a mission.

Summer Rose had been a Huntress, a guardian of Remnant who defended the people from threats such as the Creatures of Grimm. Now that Ruby thought of it, it seemed only natural that she became a Huntress . . . in training.

In truth, she hadn't chosen to strive for such a goal because of her mother. It had been because of the stories her older sister, Yang Xiao Long, had read to her growing up. Well, half-sister. Their father had told her shortly after Summer's death that Yang's mother was not Summer, and that her true mother had abandoned her as a child.

It was a soul-crushing discovery, Ruby knew for a fact. It didn't affect how she viewed Yang at all, but she couldn't help but wonder if her sister viewed her any differently after such a discovery.

The comforting sight of her home came into view. It was a two-story log cabin with what appeared to be a sheet metal roof in dull red. There was a small wooden porch with a vertical post railing along one side of the home.

Ruby smiled as she saw her father, Taiyang Xiao Long, working in the front yard, chopping wood with an axe. He was a man with blond hair that had two small strands sticking out from the top and blue eyes. His facial hair consisted of a soul patch and small stubble along his jawline. On his right arm was a tattoo of his emblem, which resembled a heart. His hair was once a bright shade of gold, but in his older age, it had notably grayed somewhat. It was still blond, but far more subdued.

He wore brown cargo shorts with a dark brown belt, black shoes, a red bandana on his left arm and a brown leather vest over a tan dress shirt with the right sleeve cut off. For armor, he wore a metal spaulder, leather vambrace and a brown fingerless glove all on his right arm.

He possessed a rather muscular build, which complimented his close-quarters style of combat.

"Hi, Dad!" she called.

Tai looked up from his work and smiled as he spotted his daughter approaching. "Hey, Ruby!"

"Is Yang home?" Ruby asked.

"Ah . . . no, she's out on Bumblebee," Tai replied.

Bumblebee. Figures. Bumblebee was the name that Yang had given to her sports motorcycle. She'd gotten it a few weeks ago, and she'd been obsessed with it ever since she'd laid eyes on it. Ruby specifically remembered the day she'd seen it for the first time. She had been looking around at each motorcycle with interest, but when she saw Bumblebee, she was visibly in love.

Ruby nodded in response to what Tai had said. "I'm heading inside."

"Did you do your chores?" Tai asked.
