An alarm rang in its annoying tune.
Allison never hated mornings, but she particularly didn't like this one. Nightmares woke her up in the middle of the night; she was cold and sweaty. She wasn't able to sleep since then.
She reached over to check her phone. It was 6:56 am, and if she didn't get up, she wouldn't be able to catch the bus at 7:30 am. It was her first day of school, though it was November. Allie and her twin sister, Virginia (aka Gin, which is was Allie calls her), were just adopted by their new parents recently, and they had just begun to settle in.
Usually, Allie liked meeting new people and was excited the night before to go to school the next day. But lately, she has been going through a lot. Her old adoptive parents abused both Gin and her by starving them and occasionally beating them. Ginny has always been the one to protect Allie, but they both tried their best to protect each other from harm from their old parents.
Gin and Allie were in a new house now, and they were safe. This didn't stop them from having nightmares though.
Allie's thoughts were interrupted by a raspy voice. "Oi, Al, get up. I know you had a nightmare yesterday. Take a shower and eat something, you'll feel better."
Allie slowly got up and went to the bathroom. Ginny was her favorite person, and they trusted and told each other everything, especially after what they have been through. They have always been there for each other.
She had been slightly jealous of Gin, though. She has recovered more from her mental health issues than Allie and has been clean of self-harm for a few months. Allie, on the other hand, hadn't.
Allison slowly undressed and looked at herself in the mirror. Scars from beatings, and scars that she created. She was skinny and hungry, but she has gotten used to the feeling of hunger. Allie forgot what it was like to feel satisfied, full, and happy.
Allie got into the shower, feeling the warm water on her head, slowly dripping down her face. Her hair was short, dark brown, and wavy. As the shampoo lathered in her hair, she realized she can't take too long in the shower, and got out a few minutes later. Allie grabbed her glasses and brushed her fringe as she dressed in a hoodie and leggings and went downstairs.
"I got your bag and phone for you. You're welcome." Gin said. Allie faked a smile and said bye to her new guardians and went out the door with Ginny.
"I noticed that you started getting nightmares again. Do you wanna talk about it?" Her sister said.
Allie replied with a simple, "No" as they walked to the bus stop. Allie loved her sister. She admired her sister's long brown hair and freckled face. Ginny has always seemed to understand her.
Why is she so caring and nice to me when she went through the same torture? Why can't she realize that she got hurt while trying the protect me? How can she still care for me when I am selfish enough to let her suffer for me, while I did nothing to help her?
Her thoughts drowned out as they reached the bus stopped in front of them. She got on the bus, and sat next to a window. Gin sat beside her.
Allie closed her eyes, trying to get a few minutes of sleep in before she has to face people. She tried to remember the times when she was happy with Gin, but she couldn't think of anything. Instead, the thoughts of those horrible people entered her mind, and the times when Ginny had been raped in front of her eyes, and she didn't do anything.
She must've been shaking, because she felt herself being hugged by Ginny. She loved the feeling of being held, and she opened her eyes and gave Ginny a genuine smile, which gave Gin a look of relief that her sister was feeling better.
A few minutes later, the bus stopped in front of their new high school. They were both in ninth grade and were pretty nervous.
Ginny asked a group of three kids where the office was, and soon Allie was being dragged to the office by Gin. Allie had obviously not been paying attention and got a few concerned looks by the group before walking beside Ginny.
"It's gonna be alright. We are not gonna have the same classes, but hopefully, we have a few together." Ginny said, comforting Allie.
They walked into the office, and a nice old lady gave smiled and greeted them.
Ginny did all of the talking, and soon they had their schedules, and a small map so they could find their classes.
"We both have fourth period together, so we can go to lunch together. Okay? Allie, I know it will be a little hard to focus today, but please try. Don't be nervous, and if you get a panic attack, go to the bathroom and cool off. Now, go to homeroom. I'll see you later." Ginny said this as she gave a quick hug to Allie.
Allie found her homeroom class with the help of a sophomore, who was headed the same way.
