Decisions

"Cassandra!" Evander screamed as he ran to grab her. He looked away as the train hit her. Only it didn't hit her. Instead, it went right through her. Cassandra breathed heavily, her legs shaking under her as the adrenaline drained away. Evander groaned hiding his face in his hands, "are you crazy?! You could have been killed!" he yelled as Cassandra got back on the platform.

"I think you're meant to get on the train Evander. It is your way out of here." Cassandra smiled standing in front of him, still breathing heavily, "That's why you got hit by the train and I didn't! And of course, you went flying yards away when you got hit but didn't get any injuries because you're a ghost! It makes total sense!" Cassandra smiled. Evander didn't though.

"So you wouldn't be able to get on the train if it did stop?" Evander questioned as Cassandra shrugged.

"I guess not."

"But you wanted to see what it looked like, where it went, where it comes from." Evander frowned. Cassandra's smile faltered.

"Yeah well, I can't go on it Evander. It won't be solid for me- I'm not dead."

"Well, then I'm not leaving." Evander huffed and sat down on the bench. Cassandra groaned in annoyance and stood in front of him.

"You don't want to leave because I can't go with you?" She huffed. Evander looked up at her and nodded firmly.

"Yes."

"That's ridiculous Evander, you have to! You don't want to sit here for the rest of eternity."

"If it means I can stay here with you, then I guess I will." Cassandra couldn't help but hid her face at the ghost's words.

"Evander," She whined, "You have to go on the train."

"You're that eager to get rid of me?"

"Yes!" Cassandra exclaimed. Evander seemed to be taken back by the statement and sat up straight.

"Well. And I thought we were friends." With that, Evander disappeared. Cassandra sighed.

"Evander! I didn't mean it like that!" She called out into the air, "I just want you to be happy- and that's not sitting here for eternity. You deserve to go on the train, find out where it goes." She was mumbling by the end, but the stubborn ghost didn't reappear, so with a sigh, Cassandra grabbed her bag and headed back to the house. The next two nights Cassandra simply sat at the Station. Evander refused to talk to her, so he simply never appeared. Cassandra began missing her friend on the third night. She missed the worried look he gave her when she gave some sort of stupid plan, missed the concerned looks when she did something stupid. Every day she would work at the barn, which was now fully built, with 3 horses and a herd of cows, and then head for the station around 9 pm. She would watch the train come by, and call Evander's name a few times before giving up and heading back to the house. On the third night, she lay down on the platform looking at the stars.

"I start school again tomorrow. I'm exhausted," She chuckled, "But I can't sleep if I don't at least try talking to you. Zephyr hasn't had any more problems with his name. Seems the older kids warned their siblings," Cassandra smiled, feeling someone watching her from the doorway.

"About the stupidly reckless girl who fought three guys and threw herself in front of a train without thinking she could potentially die? Yeah, she sounds a bit crazy." Cassandra smiled keeping her eyes on the stars as she heard Evander lay down across from her.

"I mean- they don't know about the train part," Cassandra chuckled.

"Right because if they did they would think you'd throw them in front of the train like you did with that one boy. You know the one that flew a few yards away?" Evander smiled and chuckled along with Cassandra. They fell into a comfortable silence for a while.

"You know I missed talking to you," Cassandra mumbled.

"I did too."

"And I didn't mean what I said a few nights ago- well I did, but I meant it in the way that- I mean." Cassandra began to get flustered, her sentences merging together to make no sense. Evander laughed and shook his head.

"I know what you meant now." He sat up as they heard the train coming by again. Cassandra did as well right as the engine passed. She turned to face him and smiled. Evander chuckled and stood up.

"You know the full moon is tomorrow, you think that has any significance with this whole train thing?" Cassandra followed suit, dusting her jeans off.

"You still want me to leave?" Evander questioned.

"Evander-"

"Won't you at least try to come with me? What if you can somehow stand on the train?"

"I mean- I could try, but would I ever be able to get off again? Or would I be dead? Would I die getting on the train?"

"That is the most logical thinking." Evander shrugged. Cassandra felt her chest squeeze at the thought of dying. Would it hurt? Would it be peaceful? Her breathing began to go shallow and her legs began to tremble. Evander quickly lead her to the bench where she sat down.

"I don't know Evander- What if I don't want to die?" She looked up into the piercing blue eyes that were Evanders, "What would Dad think? What would happen to Zephyr? I can't just leave-"

"Your father will be there for Zephyr, he still has his parents." Evander sat beside Cassandra, "Think about it. What else would you miss from this town?" Cassandra's panic began fading. Zephyr did have Dad to protect him, and her mother still refused to talk to her since the incident at school. She tried to think of something else she would miss. Lady was never her favourite dog. Even though the panic had faded Cassandra still felt numb at the thought of boarding the train and dying.

"I need to think about it Evander." Cassandra stood up grabbing her bag.

"If you stay I stay," Cassandra stopped at the entrance to the station, her eyes set on the white rose bushes, "If you go I'll go, either way, I'll be happy. Ok, Cassandra?" Evander stood up. Cassandra gave a curt nod before heading away from the station. Evander sighed and walked over to the rose bush plucking one off its stem, the thorns not cutting his fingers. Cassandra didn't sleep that night, nor could she focus on school the next day. Would dying be that bad? Cassandra looked around at the kids in the cafeteria around her. Some jocks were bullying a nerd near the back, the band club was huddled away from the drama, whispering about something, though Cassandra couldn't imagine what. This place was far from glamorous, so what kept her from leaving with Evander? Zephyr. Cassandra skipped her next class, instead watching Zephyr's class play outside. He had made some friends since the first day of school, friends that at the moment were examining a moth that had landed on Zephyr's hand. Her father always took care of Zephyr, he was a good father, and now Zeph had friends at his side, people he could lean on, so what was stopping her from leaving? Cassandra walked down the street towards the main road where the rainbow buildings were. As she walked and thought about what was keeping her from leaving she stopped in front of the mysterious black bookshop. She got an uneasy feeling as she stared through the windows into the dark room full of books. And then it clicked. There wasn't anything physically holding her back. Instead, it was the uncertainty of what was there after. The thought of not knowing what was going to happen, what there was going to be after she got on the train, that is what was stopping her. She couldn't see what was going to happen after she got on the train, and it scared her. Cassandra forced her feet to move as she moved passed the bookstore. Cassandra took a few breaths and felt a calmness flow over her. She just needed to trust and take the jump. She smiled and ran back towards the school, nearly missing the bus. For the rest of the evening, Cassandra was jittery. The uncertainty and thoughts about death would resurface ever so often, but she would continue to push them down. She wanted to do this, she would get to be with Evander.
