"Heeeeyyyy~!"

"Hey, Mizuki." Mizuki sat down next to me and I gave them the rest of my food. We'd only been sitting together for a couple days, but it had already become routine that they would be late, I would be full, and I would hand over the rest of my food.

"Sooooooo... I was wondering if you have a date to the dance tonight?"

"Uh, no," I said, "I was hoping to but I'm gonna have another lonely Valentine's Day."

"That's sad."

"Rui don't be mean!" Mizuki slapped his arm.

"Now you're being mean. " They glared at each other for a few seconds before giggling and going back to their food.

Mizuki smiled at me, that mischievous look in their eyes that I'd only seen once before in the last week, when they told me they and Rui had hatched a plot to fill a toilet with gasoline and light it. "My friend wants to go to the dance with you."

"I thought Rui had his sights set on someone else." I could hear Rui choke but I didn't bother to turn and look.

"Y/n! I have other friends!" They smiled and took another bite of my food. "We all decided to ask our crushes to the dance because it's Valentine's Day and we're lonely as fuck!" They took another bite of food. "And since I don't have a crush on anyone right now, I thought I would be the wingman!"

Rui leaned over. "Not true! Not true! You have a crush on Akito's sister!"

"Nuh-uh! I don't even know where you got this information!"

"I got it from Tsukasa. Who got it from Toya. Who got it from Akito. Who got it from Ena. Who already knows. You should be better at keeping your crush a secret. At least from the person the crush is on!"

"Nope. Not buying it. You found some gossiper and paid them off for some dirt on me! Well let me tell you, the gossiper lied!"

"Mizuki, the past is the past. I would never do that now that I am ripe and mature."

"Mature, pfft." They took an aggressive chomp at my bread. "You still sleep with a stuffie!"

"Nuh-uh! C'mon y/n! You know how much Mizuki lies! Back me up here! They can't be trusted."

I looked at both of them for a while. "Neither of you can be trusted." They looked at me with the same expression of annoyance on their faces. Then the bell rang.

Mizuki quickly gave me their friends number and a link to a group chat called Nightcord at 25:00 before running off to class.

After school, Mizuki told me their friend was gonna meet me at the dance tonight. "She doesn't actually go to this school, but I gave her my ticket so yeah."

"She doesn't go to this school? Then how does she know who I am?"

"She doesn't." Mizuki laughed maniacally and trotted away.

So Mizuki set us up? Why? Maybe we had something in common? If Mizuki had given this person their ticket, that would mean that they wouldn't be there. I would have to actually introduce myself to her. I couldn't just ask Mizuki to tell her who I am. This was going to be a nightmare.

When I got home, the first thing I saw when I came in the door was my mother shoving a paper in my face. "Y/n! You didn't tell me about the Valentine's Dance tonight! Or should I call it "Cupid's Passion Bash"? Are you going? Do you have a... date?" She poked me in the ribs a couple times.

"Hold on, Mom. Let me at least set my bag down." I put my bag on the stairs to take it up to my room later, then rushed back to the kitchen, where my mother had migrated to.
