Enzo was jolted awake by the insistent ringing of his phone. He groggily opened his eyes to see Aniyah propped up on her elbow, her dark hair cascading over her shoulders and a playful smirk on her lips. Light from the digital clock danced across the room, flashing 4AM.
"What the fuck, Amore? I'm tired. Didn't you get enough of my cock?" Enzo jokes, before burying his head under the pillow again.
Aniyah hit him playfully on the chest. "No, you jerk. Your phone was ringing off the hook, baby," she said, pointing at the nightstand where Enzo's phone remained lit up with 11 missed calls from the office.
He had people working 12-hour shifts for him and he figured it was an emergency. Enzo sat up in bed, cursing under his breath. Aniyah stirred beside him, propped up on one elbow, looking concerned. He grabbed the phone from the nightstand and dialed Ze's number, pacing the balcony in a flurry of energy.
"Ciao Ze?" he asked into the receiver. "What's going on? It has to be something important for you to be calling me this fucking early in the morning." He added.
"Boss, we have a problem." Ze shouted over the phone in complete panic. "It's all gone — our data, all of our software that we have been working on. What are we going to do? Salvatore is going to be pissed off."
His voice cracked as tears ran down his cheeks.
"Ze, shut the fuck up so I can think," Enzo barked into the phone. "Call in Beth, Daniel and Jai and tell them all that we have an emergency. I'll be there in about 30 minutes, and we'll debrief my brother. And Ze..."
He paused, his voice turning serious. "Keep this quiet."
Enzo quickly hung up the phone and threw on a fresh suit. He couldn't believe it — all of their hard work had vanished. Someone was going to pay for this. Enzo clenched the wheel tightly as his car navigated its way through the busy city streets, his mind filled with dread. As he made his way to their office, all he could think of was how Salvatore would react when he found out what had happened. A wave of anger washed over him as he wondered who could have done this to them.
He rushed into the building and flew up the stairs, taking two steps at a time. He burst through the office door, his chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath. His thoughts raced with worst-case possibilities — had there been a data breach? Was someone out to steal their company's secrets? He didn't know what was going on, but he couldn't wait around for answers.
Enzo slowly climbed the stairs. When he reached the top, he paused in front of the tech room door. A faint clicking and typing could be heard coming from inside. He took a deep breath before pushing open the door to find Ze, Beth, Daniel and Jai hunched over their keyboards, furiously searching through lines of code while trying to make sense of thousands of wires going in every direction.
Enzo barked out a harsh, "Ze!" from the center of his office, his arms crossed in front of him. Ze shuffled over, trying not to meet his boss' gaze.
"Yes, Boss!"
Enzo uncrossed his arms and softened his tone.
"Talk to me, what have you guys found out? I know it's scary, but this is a tech company - things like this happen sometimes. We just need to figure out how to fix it." he reassured.
Ze looked up at Enzo, his forehead covered in sweat.
"Sorry, boss, we're still trying to figure out the source of the breach. We think it's coming from an external network, but the coding is hard to decipher." he explained.
