Alcina
The warmth from the fireplace encompassed the sitting room while the infernal winter storm beat against the glass window panes of the castle. Wind whistled continuously outside, a whistle that at times sounded more like a howl. Winter was viscous this time of year and after the incident a few days ago she was thankful for the warmth within her castle. Grateful her daughters remained safe and warm within its walls, alongside her and her maids and her new gift.
Presently, Alcina sat in one of the parlors, her attention drawn by her gift. She watched the girl as she silently worked. It was one of the rare occasions during which the double doors to the dining room stood open to air out the room. She observed 19–04, or Nine rather, as she diligently set the table for dinner after having helped with the cleaning.
For a new maid to work without much supervision was highly unlikely. It had been a mere four days since the girl had been integrated into the staff and already she was working on her own and from what Alcina could tell, doing an excellent job as well. After Elena's daily reports on the girl's performance and acclamation she ought not to be surprised.
"She does rather well, my lady."
Alcina lifted her gaze from the paperwork she had been focusing on, "is that so?"
"Oh yes. Quick learner. Quiet and respectful, teachable. I like her all right." Elena nodded with a smile.
"That is good to hear. Let me know if any issues arise."
"I doubt one would, but I shall let you know." Elena furrowed her brows then smiled as if remembering something.
"What is it?"
"She's very careful in the kitchen with Sorina. I heard the first day when she cut her hand she almost gave our cook a heart attack when she dumped a tray full of fresh potatoes without batting an eye. Had it not been for Cassandra I think the girl might've ended up as one of you vintages."
"Right. I heard about that."
"Its all quite fine though. Sorina says she likes her. Especially with how protective she is of you all."
Oftentimes Alcina doubted that it was the girl being protective of them. Then again the girl had need to ensure none of them consumed her blood even when it could mean freedom. That fact coupled with the way she had worried about Daniela's hands made her think that maybe, just maybe the girl did want to protect them.
"Evening, mother."
Past the crackling fire Cassandra's soft voice drew her away from her thoughts and the white haired girl. She watched her fidgeting daughter for a moment. Her little bug had barely uttered a word other than apologies in days. Alcina knew the guilt was gnawing at her not solely because Nine had been punished but also because her actions had led to her sister being harmed. It was true that Daniela had recovered rather quickly, but she had still gotten hurt.
Out of her three daughters, Cassandra had always been the most overprotective. She was their guard so to speak and she took the role quite seriously. Having been the reason one of her sisters had been in danger was affecting her, severely. And so she had been quiet and overly obedient and tame. No giggles rang, no flittering among her flies. No sound other than apologies and curt greetings in days.
"Come here, Cassandra."
The brunette who had been standing at the other side of the room sheepishly approached her. Head bowed and worrying over her bottom lip, Cassandra looked the same way she had the first time she allowed herself to seek out Alcina's warmth. She felt a pang at her daughter's demeanor and gently lifted her head with a finger under her chin.
