I was sitting by the dock, fishing rod in hand, and there was nothing today. I had changed from my spot over half a dozen times and there was still nothing like how it was the other day. All the people at the docks were watching me, so the pressure was on. Taking in a deep breath, I let out a sigh and just waited. Closing my eyes, my hands tightened around the fishing rod, waiting for something to happen. A small gust of wind came by and all of a sudden, there was a little tug on the rod. I yanked it up and out of the water, revealing a decent size fish. I let out a sigh of relief as I took it off the hook and placed it in the cart my father had bought.
Picking my head up, I was face to face with someone who was intently watching. I was so taken aback that I almost fell off the port and into the water. The person quickly reached over and grabbed my wrist, preventing me from falling. I let out a sigh of relief as a smile appeared on both of our faces.
"Glad I caught you," they said and helped me up.
"T-Thanks for the save," I said, taking note of their apperance.
They were tall, and I mean really tall. Sporting a traditional toga, everything about their style was anything but traditional. They had a black mohawk with braids on the side of their head. Their noticable bust indicated that they were a woman. But how could a woman be so tall and built like a guy? While I didn't really see much of what was underneath the toga, her biceps gave it away that she was built. Along with how the left side of the toga split down and allowed me to see her leg. The one thing that captured my attention were her eyes. They were amber. It was very uncommon for amber eyes. While some could consider it rare, it was just highly uncommon.
"You catching anything good?" she asked.
"N-Nothing yet," I said. "Just a decent sized one. You should have seen the one from the other day. It was about my size!"
She chuckled, "I am surprised you were able to pull that size of a fish in."
"For some reason, it felt as if it weighed like nothing."
"Must have been the adrenaline helping you there."
"Yeah, that could have been it."
"Do you fish often?"
"Not really. It was just the other day when my father told me I should fish."
"Why's that?"
"My mother and my friend were late coming to the market to sell or trade our produce. So he made me come out here and fish."
"These docks aren't really known for their fishing business, that's for sure."
"You know about that?"
"Everyone knows about that," she said. "With how busy the area is with ships going in and out, the fish are finding a more peaceful place to stay. You should try going up stream and fish around this one tree. You'll know you're there immediately."
"Oh, thanks for the advice. Do you fish often?"
"Here and there. I mostly just listen to other people."
"That's the good source of information," I chuckled.
"Probably one of the best."
"Oh, I am so sorry. I'm Y/N," I said, holding my hand out to her.
"Odessa."
"Odessa."
"Kind of like Odysseus," she said.
"I like it. It suits you, but I think Dez would work even better," I smiled.
"You think?"
"Yeah. Hey, thanks for the advice. I-I'm probably going to head out that way."
"Want me to join? Fishing can get kind of lonely when you don't have anyone."
"Sure! I wouldn't mind the company," I said.
"Here, let me get the cart," she said and grabbed the ends of it, hauling it off.
"You're pretty strong," I said, making sure I had my fishing rods and bait.
"My father taught me a lot," she said.
"I'm sure he was strong when he was growing up."
She smiled slightly, "He sure was. Taught me everything there is to know."
"Do you live around here?"
"Bit of a walk, but nearish."
"I see. Does your family come to the market?"
"N-Not really. I-I'm really the only one left of my family."
"I-I'm sorry to hear that."
"I wouldn't worry about it," she chuckled. "They were around for as long as I needed them."
"I'm glad they were around when you needed them. But if you ever need someone to talk to, I'll always lend an ear."
"T-That's very kind of you, Y/N."
"Of course. My mother told me to always be kind to people, but as I learned growing up, the world is cruel. And people can take advantage of my kindness. So I just try to help whenever I can."
Odessa stopped, which caused me to turn around and face her.
"Dez? You alright?"
"Y-Yeah," she nodded her head, starting to walk again. "I-I just can't imagine people being so rude to someone with a kind heart."
"I thought the same thing, too, but I was in for a rude awakening."
"Know this, Y/N, I will never take advantage of you in any way."
"T-That's very kind of you, Dez, but we just met each other. M-My trust in others isn't the best either. I-I want to see it in action before I believe anyone. I-I'm sorry to say that."
"No, I totally understand. I understand where you're coming from. W-When I was growing up, I-I couldn't really trust anyone either. I had to look after myself and my siblings whenever something would come up. It was hard to make friends, but we eventually did."
"Sorry to change the subject, but how do you get your hair to stand up like that?" I tried to reach over and touch her hair, but she backed her head away.
"Magic," she chuckled.
"Come on, let me touch it," I laughed, really trying to touch it.
"Hey, back off," she laughed, playfully shoving me away from her.
"Alright, alright. Since you want to keep a secret."
"If you knew, you probably wouldn't want to touch it."
"Let me guess, you use some sort of oil that makes it stick up."
"Something like that," she said.
I chuckled and shook my head, "You're so mysterious, Dez."
"What can I say?" she shrugged. "You never know who I really am until you know the true me."
