"You don't say!" Spidertail argued.
"Be quiet, Spidertail! Now is not the time!" Tigerfur hissed. "Fernstar is planning to take care of the matter as we speak! We don't want what happened to Ferngaze to happen to us next."
"He was my brother, Spidertail, not yours," Mossgaze agreed through gritted teeth.
"Yes, we've all heard how your mother didn't want you and kept Ferngaze instead," Spidertail snorted. "You're no more important than I. I know my position in this Clan, unlike many of you other ungrateful warriors!"
This idiot doesn't know what he's saying! Russetfire thought. She dug her claws into the ground in an attempt to not run up behind the warrior and bat him on the head.
"Frostpaw, go inside the den and dry yourself," Russetfire said to her new apprentice. "Stay in there until I say otherwise."
Frostpaw nodded and backed away inside the den.
"You keep boasting about how you know your position in this Clan while you waltz around pretending you're the leader," Beeflower snarled. This was the first time Russetfire had ever seen the old queen so outraged.
"Go back to your mouldy, musty, stuffy den, Beeflower!" Spidertail snapped. "The warriors without ticks are speaking."
"Ironic, coming from the likes of that smelly furball!" Russetfire said quietly.
"You can make all the accusations you like and say what you want, but that doesn't distract from the fact that you've all been ignorant and that we need to look to those with the numbers to defend us!" Spidertail argued.
"And by numbers, do you mean RiverClan and WindClan, or do you mean Half-Sight?" Rockhopper replied.
Spidertail hesitated.
"And I find it to be rather ironic, you talking about us being ignorant while you aren't any better. This rant of yours is entirely pointless."
After a long pause, Spidertail finally snarled, "Shut up, you old fool. You have no right to be part of this."
"He has every right to be part of it," Willowleaf interjected, walking toward Spidertail from the nursery. "I would've stuck up for you, but you've become bitter and resentful. You're seriously thinking about siding with Half-Sight instead of your own Clan. I don't want Echokit and Amberkit to be like you."
Spidertail looked shocked. "Willowleaf-" he began.
"No!" Willowleaf interrupted. "I trusted you. Your kits are supposed to look up to you. They were supposed to look up to you. If you really think joining Half-Sight will save us, then you can forget about me and your kits, as you already seem to have done."
Spidertail sighed. Russetfire felt a pang of pity for the black warrior. He had gone too far, and his ambition and ignorance had pushed Willowleaf to her edge.
You'd still have your kits if you didn't agree with Half-Sight, Russetfire thought. She assumed Ivykit's death had driven him to his limit.
"That's your final answer?" Spidertail asked, an evil glint in his eye.
"I will not change my mind," Willowleaf confirmed.
"I will give you my answer then," Spidertail said, lifting his head.
The black tom's gaze lingered on the surrounding cats for a moment as he flexed his claws. Russetfire noticed that he stopped on Tigerfur and Reedtail for a short minute, instantly turning around and leaping at Beeflower.
The elder made an attempt to run, but instead of Spidertail grabbing Beeflower, his claws snagged on Tigerfur's pelt as the dark brown tabby tom leapt in front of Beeflower.
