After settling into their respective tents, both still right across from each other next to the fire, the boys fell asleep quickly. This particular night, the girls had decided to stay up for a bit and talk.
"So what happened the other night?" Ruth asked. "I don't mean to be nosy, but I'm really curious!"
"Well, I was trying to talk Jane into joining Mark and I in a little fun" Mary said.
"I'm sorry I ruined your fun" Jane said remorsefully.
"Don't worry about it Jane!" Mary exclaimed. "Like I said, you don't need to apologize for who you are."
That reminded Ruth about what had happened in the aftermath of what happened. "So, not even your family knows yet?" she asked.
No." Jane replied. "Not my family, not my friends. Until the other night, no one at all. Now you guys are the only ones who know. I have to say, it does actually feel good to not be keeping that a secret any more! Not that I want you to tell anyone! Please don't tell anyone!" she pleaded.
"Don't worry Jane, your secret is safe with us" Ruth said.
"Yup, sure is!" added Mary.
"I hope the boys don't tell either." Jane said with a mixture of hope and despair.
"We will make sure they don't say a word!" Mary said.
After their brief conversation about what had happened the other night, the girls decided to call it a night. Just as they were starting to doze off to sleep, they all heard some twigs breaking not too far from the tent. All three of the girls sat upright, straining to hear any noise and hoping the boys had heard the same thing and had woken up so they wouldn't have to try to wake them up with whatever is out there, out there.
Mary was the first to decide to try to look out of the opening and see if she could see either what was making the noise, or if they boys were awake yet. As she stuck her head out of the opening just so slightly, she heard nothing but silence.
"Well, the boys are still asleep, so obviously they didn't hear what we heard." Mary said.
"Can you see what made the noise?" Jane asked.
"I don't see anything at all" Mary responded.
Ruth stuck her head out of the tent to get a look for herself. She scanned the area directly around their tent and didn't see anything. Then she looked all around the boys' tent, and again, didn't see anything. Then she looked out across the clearing opposite from the fire pit. That's when she saw it.
"Um, guys. There's something over there in the woods watching us." Ruth said as she pointed in the direction of where she had seen the creature. "I can't tell what it is, but I can definitely see a pair of eyes staring directly at us."
Jane poked her head out of the tent next. Scanning the area Ruth had pointed out, she let her eyes adjust to the darkness, then she saw it as well.
"That's a Bigfoot!" Jane gasped. "and it's looking right at us!"
The girls retreated to the very center of their tent and had a quick, hushed discussion about what to do. After deciding on a course of action, they had to figure out which one of them would be the best person to carry out the task. After a brief talk, they determined Jane would probably be the best suited for the job.
Jane slowly and quietly unzipped the tent. Then she looked for the creature again. It was still in the same exact spot, staring directly at them. Then she closely scanned the ground directly around their tent, and found what she was looking for. She picked up three small rocks, and hoped they were big enough to get the job done. She threw the first rock at the boys' tent. It missed, sailing just inches over the top of the tent. She threw the second rock. She hit her target. The second rock hit the boys' tent right in the middle. She waited for a few seconds, and after not hearing any stirring from inside the tent, threw the third rock. The third rock hit one of the tent poles.
"Crap!" Jane exclaimed. "That was way too loud! Now I probably not only woke the boys up, but let the Bigfoot know what I was doing."
The three girls looked out of the tent again. Surprisingly, the Bigfoot was still standing in the same spot it had been in. They did notice signs that the boys had woken up though. After a few more seconds the zipper to the boys' tent opened. Mark stuck his head out.
"What?" Mark asked. "Why did you wake us up?"
"Shhhhhh!" all three girls responded simultaneously. "There is something just past the clearing over there!" They all whispered as loudly as they could.
Mark looked in the direction they were pointing and saw what they had been talking about.
"Matthew, look over there. I'm pretty sure that's a Bigfoot." Mark said, remarkably calmly.
"It would definitely appear so" Matthew responded.
