Kazuki Kurusu.
His age? Unimportant.
His height? Unimportant.
His face? Average.
His personality? Annoying.
His tendency to clean Rei's desk? Concerning.
All Rei knew about Kazuki that interested him was that the boy refused to leave him alone. Rei never said anything to him, but the makeshift wall using test folders should've been a clear sign he wanted to be left alone.
Kazuki neatly placed them on the desk and assumed Rei wanted to sleep through the class. Little did the knucklehead know that Rei couldn't afford to sleep in class.
Because his father was always watching him.
Rei assumed Kazuki would've read the room and left him alone sooner or later, but the knucklehead couldn't stop bothering him or talking about girls he was attracted to.
One of the girls he especially liked was long-haired women with life goals or talents. He said that his parents wanted him to grow up wise and to be honest, Rei was surprised Kazuki wanted to plan out who he wanted to date.
But he wasn't interested in that.
It was only another trait of his that Rei memorized in the back of his head.

By the time Rei graduated junior high, he left behind the years he stood beside Kazuki in elementary school and junior high. He trained to be a hitman with his father and did homeschooling for high school.

When Rei reunited with Kazuki, it was after his father let him back into the society he forgot about. He was ungroomed, unshaven, unaware, and exhausted.
Kazuki walked into the bar and made it his life's mission to help him. And Rei didn't have to say a word to him.
Kazuki still spoke more than Rei in a single breath.
Surprisingly, Kazuki moved into his apartment and Rei didn't mind being cared for. He enjoyed the man's invasion in his life.
After three years of tolerating the comfortable routine with someone who slept with women for information, Rei found himself questioning his discomfort about Kazuki's sexual life.
He never had to speak much to Kazuki — unless it was a greeting or a reply about the mission — but after years of hearing about the new one-night stand, Rei nearly lost his shit.
He smoked more cigarettes than he could handle and Kazuki started to notice. He always did.
But neither of them said anything.
Surprisingly, Kazuki kept his mouth shut about Rei's grumbling this time.
However, when Kazuki decided to rescue Miri after Rei shot the father — who both men didn't know was her father at the time — Rei felt even more confused.
He started to enjoy Miri's presence. She taught him more than he could teach himself.
Even the thought of being a papa with Kazuki excited him.
But he wanted to be a papa with Kazuki… officially. He wanted to have a real relationship with him.
He lost count how many missions he took on because he wanted to stop thinking about a marriage with Kazuki.
The man was straight. Rei was… someone who wasn't interested in romance until recently.
He never considered the term "aromantic" since he felt like he would've fallen in love eventually. He just never fell in love with anyone.
Everyone was just a face to him.
Another voice to listen to that he didn't want to remember by the next day.
But he loved hearing Kazuki's voice… he loved him.
And if co-parenting was the only way he could enjoy the life he wanted with Kazuki, he would do so gladly.

Kazuki kissed him.
After Miri was adopted by them, a few weeks following the death of her mother, Kazuki asked Rei if he could kiss him.
Rei was startled by the question but said yes to it. He didn't know what was up his partner's sleeve and decided to find out by accepting the kiss.
Kazuki's lips felt soft and Rei nearly forgot how to breathe. The kiss only solidified his feelings for Kazuki.
And it seemed Kazuki felt the same way…
Because he confessed to Rei about his feelings. He admitted that he hadn't been intimate with a woman since Miri came around and thought about being married to Rei a few times.
He didn't know if Rei felt the same way but seeing Rei blush, Kazuki had his answer.
Rei didn't say anything and dragged Kazuki to the courthouse to marry him. He didn't want to wait this time.
Kazuki always did things for him. He made decisions for him.
So it was Rei's turn to decide.
Kazuki happily signed the papers with Rei and moved to the beach to open their own shop after settling things with the hitman business.
Years went by and Rei started to help out with the business, impressing Kazuki.
Their love may have been a slow progression but their bond would never end.
Because Rei would never stop loving Kazuki's voice and face.
They had become important to him.
More than he thought before.
