I was five at the time.
I sat on the floor, legs crossed, entertained by a jigsaw puzzle. The pieces scattered across the timber floor were plain white, except for some that had names written on them. I grabbed one that had the name 'Lillian' messily scrawled over it, and threw it across the room.
It didn't fit. Lillian didn't fit into the puzzle.
'Darcy? What was that?' Daddy asked.
'Nothing Daddy!' I yelled back to Dad. He's been very cautious lately, ever since that big star came across the sky for Christmas and the little fat blobs walked off from people's stomaches. I don't know why. Nothing bad would ever happen to us. Dad promised me that, so why was he so afraid?
I got up from my position and toppled a little as I tried to gain my balance again. I toddled over to Dad, who was washing up dishes in the kitchen. He was staring out the window.
My chubby hands wrapped around his waist and he stiffened before relaxing when he saw it was only me.
'I love you, Daddy.'
'I love you too, Darcy.'
There was a small silence, before Dad gave me a smile.
'Alright, sweetie, it's time to go to bed now.' I wanted to argue with him- it was only 6:00. Usually my bedtime was 7:00. Maybe he was feeling extra tired tonight.
'Okaay.' I drawled the word out in a pout, but didn't argue.
'Good girl, now go clean your teeth.'
I skipped the bathroom (Who cleans their teeth anyway?) and went into my bedroom. My bedroom was painted a deep blue with rockets and space ship stickers stuck on all sides of it. There was a mirror in the corner of my bedroom where it was hardly ever used. My sister, Lorie, had used it to put make up on when she was still here. She had disappeared a few years ago. Dad told me that.
I didn't like using the mirror, because it gave me a funny feeling. Like someone was watching me. But most o free time, I tried not to think about it. Just like I tried not to think about the monsters under my bed.
It took me longer than normal to get to sleep. A thought kept turning over and over in my mind... Lillian. Lillian did not fit into the puzzle.
Just when an hour had passed, I decided I would sleep with Daddy tonight. I crawled out of my bed, and tottered out of my bedroom. But just as I was about to open my bedroom door, a scream filled the room.
I covered my ears and sunk to the floor. Tears filled my eyes. The sound... It was so horrifying.
I looked around the room to find where the bad sound was coming from.
The mirror. The mirror.
In the mirror, a small girl about my age stood. Her mouth open in a scream. It was her. She was the one screaming.
Like the average curious five-year-old I walked (tripped a couple of times, too) towards the mirror and the girl.
Once I stood a foot away, her screaming stopped and was replaced by a smile.
'Hi.' Her voice was hollow. Who was this girl who came out of my mirror?
'Hi,' my voice was steady despite my fear. 'Are you like the monsters under my bed?'
The girl laughed and shook her head.
'No. No. I am The Daughter of Mine. And I'm here to help you.'
'Help me?' I asked. I didn't need help as far as I knew.
'To scare away the monsters under your bed. To finish your puzzle.' Daughter of Mine said, an almost sinister smile stretched across her face.
Oh. She was here to help me.
'How did you know about that?' I asked.
'I've been watching you for a long time. I'm surprised you only noticed me now.' She said, cracking her fists and twisting her neck. What was she doing?
I slowly back away from her.
'What are you doing?'
'I'm helping you.' She replied simply. My heart was now throbbing in fear so much I thought it might burst from my chest. I needed to get out of here. Surely she meant danger.
I took a few more steps away from her, and then made to run. I tripped over a box of toys Dad had told me to tidy up earlier. Daughter of Mine looked at me in pity before screaming again. I covered my ears and ran to Dad's bedroom.
'Daddy! Daddy!' I screeched, and jumped on him when I was on his bed.
He woke up with an oof befroe getting out of bed as quickly as he could.
'What is it? Is it another alien occurrence?'
'Daddy! There's a girl in my mirror!' I screamed.
***
He didn't find anything in my mirror that night.
