Danny had never been particularly well off.
His parents weren't rich. His job as a shop assistant paid him minimum wage. He was mostly living paycheck to paycheck, barely making his rent. Once all his bills were paid, he was basically broke.
This had always bothered Danny. He could never afford the nicer things in life. Couldn't go out for meals with friends, or go on holidays, or buy nice clothes or the latest gadgets. It was a source of constant annoyance for him.
But at least he had a roof over his head, and that wasn't the only good thing about his life.
His flatmate Ruby was a goddess. She was Just under 6 feet tall, with long flowing blonde hair, long golden legs, wide hips, and perfectly round and firm breasts. She was originally from Australia, and so had a classic athletic surfer body. She was Danny's ideal woman.
They'd been living together for 6 months now after Danny had replied to an online ad after Ruby had advertised her spare room. He was instantly in love the first time he saw her, and had been slowly working up the courage to ask her out ever since.
He wasn't stupid. He knew she was unlikely to go for a guy like him. Puberty had never really taken hold of him, so he was only 5 feet 6 inches tall with a slim body and barely a body hair on him. He couldn't ever really afford hair cuts so he wore his hair quite long and it had grown to just below his shoulders. He had a round face with not much structure or cheekbones. On top of all of this, he was 22 years old and still a virgin. Even if by some miracle Ruby did agree to go out with him, he wasn't sure he'd be able to handle her.
OK so he wasn't exactly the ideal guy physically, but the two of them got on well, and that gave him hope. They were always laughing together and chatting, and had become really good friends.
One day, Danny was in the kitchen eating breakfast, when Ruby walked in.
"Hey Dan, how's things?" she asked cheerily, giving him a friendly squeeze on the shoulder as she walked past.
"Oh not bad" replied Danny, always pleased to see her.
She made her breakfast and sat down at the table with Danny, before starting:
"So I'm not if you know, but it's my birthday in a few months, and I was planning on heading back to Australia to celebrate with my friends and family back home. I'd love you to come and celebrate with me out there!"
Danny was shocked. She was asking him? Was she inviting him as a friend, or something more... Maybe it would be the perfect time to ask her out. On the beach in Australia, on her birthday. How romantic. But he was getting ahead of himself. Australia was an expensive trip. He could barely afford the bus fare into town let alone a flight half way around the world.
"That sounds amazing Ruby, I'd love to go I really would, but I just don't think I can afford it right now." said Danny with a defeated tone.
"Ohhh, that's such a shame." she said, looking genuinely disappointed. "I would have loved for you to be there. It won't be the same without you! Look, it's not for a few months anyway so maybe see if you could save up some money! I'll be buying my ticket at the end of next month so let me know by then if you can come!"
Ruby finished her breakfast and headed off to work, leaving Danny in the kitchen contemplating his options.
She had made it very clear that she wanted him there. 'Loved for you to be there' she said. 'Won't be the same without you'.
He had to get on that trip. He was convinced of it. If there was any hope for him to ask out Ruby and make her his girlfriend, this was it. Enough of missing out on life because of money. This was his chance to really get something good going in his life.
There were three weeks until the end of the month. Three weeks to make a lot of money. How was he going to manage it?
