SHE TRIED. She really, truly did.
But pretending the scowl smeared across her lips wasn't caused by Forks' teenage comeback couple was difficult. Incredibly so.
A fleeting bit of self-restraint had Adelina Folse clapping a fast hand over her face and sliding it into a more neutral expression. As if the motion could warp her pissy thoughts into something nicer.
It wasn't as if she had anything against Edward Cullen and Bella Swan's relationship, it was simply that she couldn't stand how they'd treated her, sweeping her to the side and right under the rug. Two different rugs, if the girl dared herself to think about it.
Edward had been her first friend in Nowhere, Washington — the guy in her corner, some years before Bella. He'd always had this air about him, this soul-deep understanding of the world around, like he knew people inside and out. He could be blunt too, blunt and truthful; she'd liked that. Needed it, even if it hurt.
Adelina had been there for Bella when the Cullen family made their sudden leave. Maybe she should've taken that as a sign, especially when Jacob Black's company was obviously preferred, but complimenting someone's book-taste wasn't exactly a tell for a quick end.
It hadn't been a tell for how easily Bella would let her go either.
Six months was as long as she could stand-in for that stupid Cullen boy, apparently.
So she watched. Watched the couple prance through the Cafeteria doors and stop at the table across from hers as her face flexed with every crossed emotion. Mike Newton was there. Adelina stopped talking to that baby-face when he'd welcomed Bella back with open arms. /
