I groan as my team and I make our way down the path we have been following, a path that we had a lead on, but now we haven't got anything.
As I'm about to say we should stop for the night, I hear one of my men yell out, "Sergeant!" and then fall to the ground. I yell at my team to get down as more bullets start flying at us. I quickly check to make sure my guns have a good amount of ammo and then signal my men to start shooting back. 'Why did I decide to join the army?' I think as I start to shoot.
My men are slowing down, they are reloading slower, and their reaction time is way slower, we might be meeting our end soon. 'This is it.. we are gonna die.' All I hear on my radio is static, no explanation as to who is shooting at us or how many people there are. I fall back onto the ground to reload and catch my breath. My body hurts. My arms and legs are tired. My bones even ache from nonstop moving for the last 4 days with no rest. But this is how it is. This is what we all signed up for, exhaustion and pain is our lives.
I let my ears go deaf to the sounds of screams and gunshots. We are never going to make it out of this war, and they knew it when they assigned us to fight. By the time the firing stops, I've lost 13 of my men and a few severely injured. It seems to be over until I have the feeling of being watched.
I look all around us and stop when I look into the woods and see a figure standing there watching us. I go to grab my gun, but the person quickly runs away before I could fully pull it out. I sigh and chalk it up to my sleep exhaustion and turn to look back at my men. "Let's find a spot to set up camp for the night," I say out loud but more to myself. We grab the injured and start to make our way to a safe spot to sleep for the night.
After a little bit, we have set up camp and people are being tended to while I stay on watch. I stop and lean against a tree and run my hands down my face. I take in a deep, shaky breath while trying to hold back any emotion that was wanting to come out.
It's going to be a long night.
