"Ella!" Yells my mother from the other room while pouring herself a glass of wine.
I groan knowing she will ask about my day. It wasn't that I didn't want to talk about it, but I wanted to get outside. When I'm outdoors I feel..happy. I love practicing survival skills, like building fires, and picking specific herbs and plants. It was me and my dad's favorite thing to do. He would teach me all he knew from his experiences.
"Yes mother dearest?" I ask sarcastically.
"How was your-
"Wonderful!" I interrupt, not caring what she would say. It's been 3 months since my dad passed away. My mom was already with another guy, it was her way of dealing with it, we all seemed to know, even Maggie, my 4 year old sister. She would be out night after night, but I've gotten used to it. I rushed to my room where I was greeted by little Maggie petting our cat Harold. She looked at me with wide, bright green, eyes.
"Hey Ellie! I sorry I was in your room, I just missed Harold."
"That's alright little sunshine, I'm not busy or anything. Wanna go outside to our place?"
Maggie waved her head up and down twice like she always does and got up to put on her boots. I was all Maggie had since mom was out with her "friend" Daniel, and was always drinking trying to get her mind off my dad. We walked out to the forest behind our house, beside the lake. Once we got to out spot, which was a circle of flowers next to the lake, we sat with Maggie putting her head on my lap.
"Ella will you sing to me?" Maggie asked softly.
"Of course sunshine." I replied with a sad smile. I could tell she knew that mom and dad where mad at each other, but just didn't understand quite yet. She was smart for her age, and a very caring little girl.
"You are my sunshine my only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are grey. You'll never know dear, how much I love you. So please don't take my sunshine away." I finished with humming it once more until Maggie's chest started to rise and fall in a sleep-like pattern. After a few minutes of birds cherping in the cool, autumn, air, my phone vibrated in my pocket. I let out a sigh, and unlocked my phone to see my mom had texted me.From Birthgiver☺
I'm going out with friends tonight. Cook for you and Maggie.I started at the message realizing we would be alone for the night...again.
I huffed, and picked up the sleeping girl from my lap, and walked back towards our house. It was getting late, and the sun was already setting. This interested me since it was only 7:30. I shrugged and walked through the sliding glass doors of our small yet cute, little house.
"Mom, before you go can you pick me up another sketch pad?" I called setting Maggie on the couch. I got no reply.
"Mom?" Still no answer. She never leaves without saying goodbye, to at least Maggie. I quickly called her cell to rant to her for not saying anything to Maggie, but the line was dead. I tried again, and it wouldn't go through. I set my phone down with a confused look on my face. Why can't I reach her? Out of curiosity, I quickly picked up my phone to call Daniel. I still couldn't get through. I started to worry, and called my friend. It still didn't work. We didn't have a home phone or I would have tried that too.
"Where's mommy?" I hear Maggie say in a groggy voice. Great, now she is going to be even more upset. I frantically tried to think of an excuse to tell her why mom was gone.
"She went over to our neighbor, Betty."
I lie.
"Why?"
"She need to get some extra cash, you know how mom is silly with money."
I say nervously. Maggie knows me all too well.
"But why is-
Maggie was cut off by a loud knock at the door. Was it mom? I stepped towards the door, and looked out to see a man with a devilish smile. That was not my mom.Okaaaay. So Hello! This is my first story. And I've had to re-do it already.
But, I hope you like it so far. I know it's not the best and has errors. I promise it will get better! Haha okay byeee!
