Walking out of her bedroom with a book in her hand, Kaylee greets her father who was now sitting in the living room trying to cool off from mowing the lawn. While the weather was cool, being in the sun for a while always made her father drenched in sweat. The two sat and talked for a good hour until Kaylee got up and decided it was time to go outside before the sun set for the night.
Suddenly, the house when completely black. The Locke's used the windows during the day to keep the house lit to save energy. The windows had been colored a dark grey due to dark clouds. It appeared an upcoming storm was to be forming. Living in Savannah Georgia, this isn't uncommon. But the speed at which the sky went from sunny to nearly black was in a record speed. Mr. Locke turned on the lamp in the living room and looked at his daughter in confusion.
The skies tend to fill with darkness and fright before lashing out a heavy storm. But something seemed off. Slowly Kaylee and her father made their way toward the door that led outside. A sinking feeling in her gut began to form as she saw a vortex-shaped cloud began to form with a dark gray outside and forest green inside. The wind was blowing so strong trees began to fall over. Luckily the cottage was are enough away from the trees to not get struck.
"Let's get back inside before one of those branches come barrelling at us" Mr. Locke urgently stated. The two went back inside and watched more as the vortex moved around, circling the city as if it was taunting it. Out of the blue, Kaylee's phone began going off. It was Ava.
"Hello?"
"Kaylee I need you to pick me up, Uncle's van got hit by another car that got pushed by the wind. I was on the way to the party but now I really just need shelter. This storm is crazy and I am not far from your house" the panicked purple head shouted on the phone. Kaylee felt her heart begin to race even more now that her friend was out in this storm.
"Where are you" Kaylee firmly stated grabbing the keys to the family car, ignoring her father's concerned look.
"Im just down Pickleman Ave at the bottom of the hill."
"I am on my way." Kaylee hung up and began rushing to the door.
"I don't know about this Kayls it's terrible weather out" her father voiced out of concern for his daughter's safety. Both Locke's were protective of each other due to it only being them left in their family. But Kaylee and Ava are best friends. Ava has always stood up for Kaylee and protected her from everything. Ava and Kaylee are each other's rocks. Kaylee had to help her.
"I will be fine, she is just down the road. We will be back in no time. I promise" and Kaylee meant it. Mr. Locke trusted both his daughter and Ava but the weather is proving itself to be incredibly unpredictable. Since it was only down the road, however, he let her go.
"Please be careful," he said sincerely, hugging his daughter tightly.
"I will. I love you."
"I love you too, now go get my other daughter," Mr. Locke said with a giggle.
With that, Kaylee walked outside and straight over to the old Bronco the Locke's have had since before Kaylee was born. It wasn't the ideal car for her to drive in this weather but it was the only car the family had after selling her father's old one a few years back.
As she unlocked the car door, Kaylee noticed the vortex growing. Knowing this did not look good, she opened the door urgently but the force of the wind swung it back so hard to the point it nearly broke off the car. Kaylee grasped the door for dear life as she attempted to pull it shut. Mr. Locke came running out to assist in shutting the door and had to use his entire body weight to do so.
"When you get to Ava, have her jump through the window. You skinny gals will never get the door closed" he shouted out of breath through the door of the car. With that, Kaylee nodded and started up the car. She turned on her brights in the car and drove down the hill that led to her little paradise.
