Prologue

I sit at my desk and type ever more feverishly. I’m on a role for this case, so I can’t stop. As I contemplate what to type next, my computer pings. It takes me a moment to register that it’s a new e-mail. I click into my mail box and see the star marking the new message. I open the e-mail and am very confused. The e-mail address is not one I recognize and no account can infiltrate the Borough’s messaging system. I scroll down to see the message and my eyes widen. “No, no, it can’t be,” I mutter to myself in a panic. There are only two words and they read, “Hello, Goddess.  –Smeegle.” I bang my fist on the desk and scream at the top of my lungs, “Damn it!” Just as my fist hits the table again the entire building’s power goes out and my frustration boils over.
