"You should've seen her face, Penny! When she knew it was me, she freaked out and ran out of the auditorium like a crazy person!"
Penny bit into her donut. It was the weekend and we were walking through our neighbourhood, trying to look for something fun to do.
"Well, you did almost drown her in the lake, which is pretty traumatizing," Penny explained, her mouth full. I gaped at her. I was never going to live this down.
"It was an accident! Ronnie ticked me off!" Penny scowled at me.
"Yeah, you get ticked off easily." I glared at her, not amused.
"Anyways, I don't think I should be a zombie, I beat Ronnie to a pulp! I kind of felt bad." Penny snickered.
"Anybody could beat Ronnie up, even that kid from civics! Don't worry too much about it." I sighed.
"I didn't want to ruin the play, but I'm clumsy and I always let everyone down!" I stomped my foot. "Mr. Lewis must hate me."
Penny's face suddenly lit up.
"I know! You could audition for the role of Emily!"
I nearly tripped over my own feet. "What?! I'm so not cut out for being Emily, and I'm just so aggressive. And who would be Chris? I don't want to end up with some weirdo." Penny shrugged.
"Maybe you'll end up with someone cool. Just go for it. Trust me."
She smiled her signature smile. Both her dimples showed this time. I crossed my arms in defeat.
"Fine, but if I'm put with some nerd, it's on you!"
We both laughed. A few blocks away, we started to hear party music. It was so loud, the beat rising and rising like it would explode everyone's eardrums any second.
People were running out of their cars to the party. Everyone was wearing fancy clothing; gorgeous dresses, perfectly ironed blouses. It looked like some kind of sweet sixteen party.
"Whoa! That party looks amazing! I wish we could go," Penny said in amazement. As we neared the party's location, it all started to seem familiar.
The party music was coming from some rich girl's backyard. The Pierce's backyard to be exact. Streamers and balloons were flowing all over the roof of the mansion and there was a large sign that read, 'HAPPY SWEET SIXTEEN MACEY' on the porch's roof.
"Hey, remember Macey Pierce? Lila's older sister? I guess it's her sixteenth birthday." Penny rolled her eyes.
"Ew. Now that party doesn't seem fun anymore," Penny responded.
Everyone knew Lila acted like a spoiled snob, but everyone loved Macey- she was the complete opposite. She was always the positive and perky one, and she loved to help people; or at least that's what I heard. Lila despised her sister which was why she made up the rumor that Macey had been adopted.
"You know, Macey isn't like Lila, she's actually nice," I smiled brightly. Penny groaned. She gave me a look like, 'I can't believe you fell for that crap'.
"She's a Pierce, you know I don't like the Pierce family. Remember what happened last year?"
Last year, when we were still in middle school, Mrs. Pierce thought we were a friend of Lila's, so she had invited us into their palace of a mansion. Penny and I had been ecstatic that we were invited into a beautiful house. Macey was welcoming, Lila not so much.
"Oh my god! Is that Lila's house?!" Penny adjusted her glasses and squinted.
