A few after the death of Boyd, Cora and Stiles were in the loft as she explained a bit of Derek's past, when he was a teenager. "They were there for two days, waiting, hiding. That's what we're taught to do when the hunters find us... hide and heal."
"Okay, so is two days standard, then, or are we thinking Derek's on, like, some extended getaway?" Stiles asked. Derek had disappeared after he had been used like an instrument to kill Boyd. Cora spun around in anger.
"Why do you care?" she asked, making Stiles' eyes widen.
"Why do I care?" Stiles asked sarcastically. "Let's see... because over the last few weeks, my best friends tried to kill himself. His boss nearly got ritually sacrificed. A girl that I've known since I was three was ritually sacrificed. Boyd was killed by alphas. I... do you want me to keep going? 'Cause I can, all right? For, like, an hour!" Stiles listed.
"You think Derek can do anything about that?" Cora asked.
"Well, since he's the one everyone seems to be after, it's more like he should do something about it, yeah." he said, shrugging.
Cora shook her head and turned back to look out the window. The rainfall was getting heavier. "I don't know. There's something different about him now. He wasn't like this when we knew him." Cora explained.
"What was he like?" Stiles asked. That was when the sound of footsteps coming down the spiral stairs of the loft met their ears, as Peter walked down from upstairs.
"A lot like Scott, actually." Peter explained. "A lot like most teenagers... unbearably romantic, profoundly narcissistic, tolerable really only to other teenagers."
"And so what happened? What changed him?" Stiles asked.
"Well, the same thing that changes a lot of young men." Peter said. "A girl." Stiles scoffed.
"You're telling me some girl broke his little heart? That's why Derek is the way he is?" Stiles asked.
"Do you remember Derek before he was an Alpha had blue eyes? Do you know why some wolves have blue eyes?" Peter asked.
"I just always thought it was, like, a genetic thing." Stiles confessed.
"If you want to know what changed Derek, you need to know what changed the color of his eyes." Peter motioned for Stiles to take a seat as he walked to the couch.
He began to explain what Derek's high school life was like. He was the typical high school kid, who was really good at basketball. But one fateful day, as he was hanging out with his friends in the hallway, practicing his dribbling and defense, one girl came up to him to tell him to stop. He challenged her to take the ball from him, and if she did, he'd stop, but he ran circles around her, before she gave up and walked back to the music room. Derek, feeling bad, followed her to apologize and ask her name, to which she challenged him to play one musical instrument in the room for her name, and he played smart, and picked up a triangle, and rang it once, getting the girl's name. Paige.
"Okay, so if Derek was a sophomore back then, how old was he?" Stiles asked, before realizing something else. "How old were you? How old are you now?"
"Not as young as we could have been, but not as old as you might think." Peter said, making Stiles squint his eyes at the once alpha.
"Okay, that was frustratingly vague." Stiles turned to Cora. "How old are you?" Cora was about to answer, but decided to be a bit annoying.
"Well, how old is Y/N?" she asked.
"You're sixteen?" Stiles asked. Cora chuckled.
"I'm 17. A few months older than Y/N." Cora explained.
