Urban Fiction: the relating to, characteristic of, and or constituting a city
something invented by the imagination or feigned literature (such as novels or short stories). Typically the characters include African-American, Hispanic, and or coastal descents. The literary characters are placed in romantic involvement, strenuous conditions, questions of morality and of crime.
(Merriam Webster's Dictionary)
The genre has been around since the mid 1990's with some variations. A popular book from the category is Sister Soujiah's The Coldest Winter Ever (1999). This book is considered a staple within the community. Some film movies also include Set it Off (1996), Player's Club (1998), and Secret Society (2013).
It became popularized again in the early 2000's. Along with books of this genre there were film, poetry, and music produced. Recently, The Diamond Girls (2022) movie was published to the TubiTv streaming service. This genre receives little to no recognition outside of the POC community. There was a transition to online stories during 2010's. It was controversial with parental guidance as teenagers started to create social media accounts and engage in chat-conversation games.
The genre is written primarily by women. In the online-world, most teenage girls were introduced by popular boy bands and celebrities. Fan-Ficiton is another category associated with the genre. Some popular celebrities included but are not limited to One Direction, Justin Bieber, OMG Girlz, Mindless Behavior, and The Weeknd.
The writers popularized the use of; images of the celebrity, other music samples, and text language, and polyvore outfits. It was written by the (12-16) age group, so throughout the short stories/books were missing words, punctuation and had grammatical mistakes. Most should consider it as a way to improve engagement with English/Language/Arts classes during school hours.
