"Dad I'm 19 years old now, you know I love and respect you but I'm not falling for these lies anymore." Lance and my father are by the barn. This seems like a private conversation I should probably go back in the house. But I don't, I'm not leaving this sounds like its going to be some juicy gossip.
"Boy, I have no idea what you're talking about. Nothing is going on and you need to go pack we are leaving soon." My dad states while packing up some tools from the barn. My brother takes a deep breathe, and whispers something in my fathers ear. " I found your ............ room." My dads smile drops away, what in the world did lance say?
Suddenly, I have this odd feeling in my body. I don't want to listen anymore so I quickly leave before they notice me. I go back in the house, faith is dancing in circles with excitement still. "Little girl get in here and pick out your clothes, I don't want to hear you complaining that you don't like the outfits I found." My momma states. "Yes momma," faith says still dancing but going towards her room.
"Man I'm about to get these laaaadies, cuz I know they can't resist me." Lonnie my second oldest brother chants. "Don't nobody want you Lonnie," I tell him. "Girl, I got broads in Atlanta." Lonnie sings.
My brother Lonnie has always been a cocky butt head. Though he is the second oldest son him and lance are twins so it's by like 4 mins and he always makes sure to tell everybody this. Lonnie pretends to be a player but in reality he is a big softy. While Lance is always kind but I can't help but feel like there is a darker side to him that he keeps to himself. In my culture we buried problems we don't want to acknowledge or don't have answers for.
When I start a family, I'm going to break that curse on our family. I don't understand why adults always want to hide things that happen. Like what in the world happened to grandma, but I know I can't ask that.
We are on the road now in the RV, my daddy is blasting his music. Lance seems to be thinking hard about something. Now I kinda wish I would had stayed and listen, that's what I get for being a chicken. I planned to play on my switch until we get to the hotel. Faith is taking a nap in grandpa's lap, we keep telling her she is too big for that now but my grandpa can't help but spoil her. He is asleep too. Grandma is reading her bible and my mother and Lonnie are talking about his outfit, my mother does not like Lonnie's look at all.
We have been on the road for about an half an hour, just one hour to go. The weather has changed from sunny to dark and misty within moments. We begin to hear sirens, I look out the window to see the road is being blocked. The officers seem to be checking peoples I.D.'s before crossing the tracks.
"Well this is weird, it doesn't look like there is anything wrong with the road or railroad tracks, why are they stopping and inspecting all of the cars." my mother says to my father. Lance has a strange look on his face but doesn't say anything. There are 4 cars ahead of us in the line. "I'm sure its nothing honey." My daddy says.
"The officer walks up to the RV, "Howdy, Howdy, how y'all folks doing?" My dad response, "Doing well, so what's all this about up there officer Todd?" "Oh it's just a regular inspection, I think. There are a lot of new guys in town in suits, you know the FBI looking type, don't know what they would want with a little town like ours." Officer Todd leans in with a hard grin, "My dogs Usher, Flora and Odin are enjoying all the company. It's been a while since you have stopped by bring the family over sometimes or the dogs will get lonely again." Officer Todd leans back. "You know the time really does fly by, we will definitely visit soon." My dad give a hard thumbs.
One of the suited men come towards the car. "Is there a problem here?" He asked staring at my dad and officer Todd with a blank expression. It's strange, I don't know how to explain it but the guy in the suit just feels weird. I peek out the window to look at him but the more I look in his direction I feel less and less like I can move. He turns to make I eye contact with me but before I can see his eyes. My father music begins to play at full volume.
"Oops" my dad says, "I didn't mean to touch that with my belly ,I gotta work out more." Then Officer Todd waves us forward," Well you guys enjoy your day."
We drive away, I run to the back of the RV to get another look at the man in the suit. My dad shouts, " Hey sit your little butt down dawn I'm driving you know the rules." I go back to my seat.
My dad is driving a lot faster now and the weather is sunny again. If I didn't know any better I would think we were running away from something.
