The officer looked them up and down, while also eyeing the temperature reading displayed on the small screen. His brows furrowed as he observed them, the remnants of smeared blood underneath their nose becoming all more noticable.

You had noticed the uncomfortably long silence, now tapping your foot impatiently, hoping to get through the gates before the sun set, the two of you intending to stock up on some fresh crops, and maybe some new clothes to bring back to your shared home just a few miles away, maybe stay somewhere in town before heading back home in the morning..

His voice was distorted though the filter of his gas mask. A barely audible "I'm sorry," as he raised his rifle to their head.

You won't ever forget the look on their face, the one you make when you realize it's truly over, or maybe you wouldn't know what that looks like. Maybe the gate officer would remember it maybe he lies awake at night thinking about all the lives he's taken. Maybe, they're all just people to him, not mothers, or husbands or beloved children. They were someone to you, you knew that. They were the person who always made the world feel so much better, the one who patched you up when you got hurt, the one who always knew just what you needed to hear. They were the only one you had left.

So what was there to do now?

Your no longer shared home felt empty, and open. The feeling of homeliness had left long ago with them. The sofa felt stiff, and the food flavorless. The emptiness in your stomach weighed you down, pulling all motivation and confidence to the ground. Maybe there was nothing left? Maybe you had lived your life to the fullest, so was it still worth it?
