William Afton is the most known character in the five nights at Freddy's story. He was the father of the Afton family which consisted of the oldest son Michael, the middle child Elizabeth and the youngest child the c.c.
William Afton was the founder of the Freddy Fazbear franchise which was really popular at this time (besides of the murders). William always seems to be kind of a good person but he had a dark secret: He was the murder from all the missing kids. But no matter how often he killed kids, he never really was seen as the murder. Only one person, William's partner Henry Emily, had thought that it was him and so Henry kicked William out of the team. To do revenge, William had a new victim: Henry's daughter Charlotte Emily. One day when Charlotte was outside the Freddy Fazbear restaurant, William came and killed her. That's when the puppet came and got possessed by Charlottes soul but that is an other story.
However, after a long time (many things happened in that time), William decided to go to the new Freddy Fazbears Pizza to destroy the animatronics but instead he left the souls out and he ran into a small room with the old golden Bonnie suit in it. When the souls found him, he hid in the Bonnie suit but that was a big mistake... The Springlocks in the suit went on because it had a fail funktion and William Afton died in that suit. Well, he didn't really died. For some reason he was still "alive" but he was trapped in that golden Bonnie suit. That's why his name is also Springtrap. All of that you can see in a mini game in Five Night's at Freddy's 3. In that game you can also see Springtrap as a working animatronic who attacks you if you don't play the sound of Balloon Boy (another animatronic). If you finished the ending in fnaf 3 you will see that it got burned down however...
But you really didn't thought Springtrap is really dead right? No no no, Springtrap or now better known as Scraptrap (yes he has many names) is now the burned down golden Bonnie suit with William in it... Well I mean if William had survived the springlock failure, a little fire can't destroy him right?
However, the next time you see Springtrap in fnaf 6. In that game you have to fight against different animatronics or whatever. When you finished the ending of fnaf 6 you will see that it got burned down, too. This time everyone and every animatronic got also burned down and "died". So it was thought...
As you can see, the story is not over yet. In the new game Five Night's at Freddy's Security Breach you play as a kid called Gregory who is trapped in the pizza plex and has to find a way out of there with the help of one of those new Glamrock Animatronics. And of course it's Freddy who helps Gregory. In the "ending" you have three choices to keep playing. One of them is the ending with... William Afton or now better known as Burntrap (it won't stop with the names). In that game you have to find a way to kill Burntrap. If you made it to the end you will have a cutscene where Gregory and Freddy run out that pizza plex while it's burning down. From that point out I would say that they "killed" Afton this time but who knows what will happen in the ruin dlc, right?
