The car begins to come to a stop; "We're here", my father spoke as we came to a full stop. My glance shifted from my father to the building. First years were scattered throughout the parking lot, in a somewhat ominous way... I looked down at the door handle, my fingertips tracing it. 'It's time', I thought to myself as a small sigh escaped my lips. "I'll see you in there, okay...?" stuttering, I felt my body begin to tremble once more. My father rested his hand on mine, squeezing it a little as we both sat there in complete silence. The air around us felt heavy as the steady pitter-patter sounds take up the remaining silence "Alright, here I go", I spoke, breaking the silence. "I'll be back, I have to go get everyone else" my dad replied as he flicked the car back on. I sighed once again, gripping my backpack as I pulled the car handle with my free hand. Shutting the door behind me I walked slowly up to the school building, the rain seeming to feel heavier than it actually was. It's this sort of rain that makes it easier to cry in... and to be honest, that's all I felt like doing.
I think even without the rain the day would feel extremely gloomy and gray. This wasn't easy for most first year students and their parents. Each step I took felt small and the timing seemed to almost feel like an eternity. I gripped the door handle, looking over my shoulder to see my family's vehicle gone before turning back to the building. I flung my backpack over my right shoulder, allowing the other strap to dangle freely, taking a step inside. The grim and yellowish lights above were hideous and blinding, squinting a little my vision came to a little. "Hello, please sign in and take a name tag", the lady at the front said, pointing to a table. She wasn't a common faculty here at Juneau high, she was way too fancily dressed. As she spoke to other first years, I noticed a slight strange accent; her voice was high pitched, and her jaw seemed to not open all of the way when she spoke.
I made my way to the table as more finely dressed people lined the other side of the table, "Name please?", a woman spoke as she tapped her pencil against a clipboard. "Can I have a name please?", she said once more. I stood there, a blank expression on my face. "Ma'am name please?" My gaze shifts between the three beside her. "Lillia... Lillia Lynn Rose", I finally spoke as she began to write on the clipboard in her hands. "Date of birth?", she quickly asked, her eyes fixated on the clipboard. It was like I wasn't even there for her. Not once did she seem to blink either. She just sat there, perfectly. "Date of birth", she boomed once again. "January 6th", I finally responded. I watched as she wrote stuff on her clipboard once more, for a brief second, I noticed the line behind me starting to form. Things were heating up. This day became even more real for me. "Alright Lillia, please grab a name tag from the end of the table and attach it to your shirt as you head towards the gymnasium after clearing out your locker. Thank you. "Next!" she spoke, as she pointed to the end of the table. I slowly shuffled myself to where the woman had pointed as a man quickly handed a holographic card to me. Engraved into this card was my name and date of birth.
My fingertips traced the engraved letters on the card that was handed to me. I pinched an area of my hoodie as I slipped, the metal clasping into my hoodie as I closed the ending of it. I gripped my backpack strap that was on my shoulder as I began to walk towards the hallway in which my locker was. My body felt heavy, it seemed like I was extremely sluggish and slow today. My head still felt foggy. It was like this was all a dream and at any moment I'd wake up. I couldn't help but keep thinking about my family. What would become of my family once they were gone? Would they still survive without me? Would they stay together? I don't ever want to think about Morgana, Entoan, and Destery being first years. I shook my head as I turned the corner to a new hallway unaware that a few other students were coming from the opposite direction. Before I could really react in time, I had already ran into one of them as my backpack and myself went tumbling to the floor. "Oh, for fuck sakes dude", I expressed as I looked up. In front of me was this boy I'd never seen before. His eyes quickly became fixated on me as he showed a slight smile. I was only sixteen, but overly mature. I wasn't boy crazy and would never be caught saying 'oh he's so fucking hot' and fawn over them. I was sometimes someone who was oblivious to these things and responded with something witty like, "Do you expect me to simp for you just because you smiled at me" and rolled my eyes. Something felt different, as we kept our eyes fixated on each other I hadn't realize that he was holding out his hand in a jester to help me up. I gripped his hand tightly as I pushed myself off the floor a little bit, coming to a steady standing position I finally took notice to how told he was compared to myself and the friends around him. This man towered over me, at a crisp height of 6'5 I was nothing but small compared to him.
