Uncle Shen clapped him on the arm.
"We'll see you tomorrow." He shook Du Yuqian's hand, nodded to Zhou Zishu and Zhao Xie and led his family out, clasping his wife's wrist gently. Zhi Yin, Li Jing An and Zhao Jing waited by the door while Gao and Lv conversed.
"What are your plans?" Gao questioned his friend; his turn to be supportive.
"I'm not sure yet. Wait and see is a good policy. We need to talk to a lawyer not in this firm." He glanced down at his wife, who sat silently watching Du. He figured that she calculated the best response as she refrained from confronting him until witnesses left. "Talk to you later." Gao waved at Du, but he stood in conversation with Wen and now Zhou Zishu. Scowling, he motioned for Zhi Yin to precede him from the room. Jing An followed. She had accompanied them to the office and parked her car at their house. She wanted desperately to go home alone. The heartbroken assistant trailed behind. Of all the people in the room, no envelope passed to him. Just as he reached the exit, a junior approached him.
"Zhao Jing, sir, before you leave. I have an envelope for you. We were instructed to mail them, but I'm sure you want to receive this now," he offered solicitously. Zhao's face answered him. Vowing not to cry in front of his employer, he tucked the cream missive into his shirt, against his heart.
"What happens now?" Zhou questioned Du quietly. He held Wen's hand, who still shivered with reaction to the morning.
"As Feng stated, we investigate. The law requires we report securities fraud to the authorities. Tao and Lv must hire another firm to represent them. Young Wen, we are responsible for this. You concentrate on fulfilling Lian's will. And taking care of yourself. Count on my clerk's extensive experience to assist you. Let Qiao Xing pamper you a little."
He beamed benevolently at them, seeing the confident Zhou support him. Sad for Zhao Xie, waiting at a distance, regarding only Wen. Once, Lian confided to him that she prayed the two men would be a couple, but it seemed not to be. Zhou noticed him there alone and drew him over to join them. Was that cruel? Du thought not. The coroner acted kindly before when the man broke down. A considerate, strong partner was just what Wen needed. Du excused himself and joined his juniors at a computer.
"Zhao Xie, what are your plans now?" asked Zhou.
"Work requires I get back to my office," he replied. "I only took a few hours off. And I scheduled meetings this afternoon." He offered his hand. "Thank you for all your support and thoughtfulness today." Zhou nodded and gripped the hand firmly. Wen too took his hand.
"Was there anything of Lian's you would like to have? Just tell me. I know Jing An and Zhi Yin would understand if it was something they were gifted." Zhao smiled.
"Thank you. Nothing comes to mind, at the moment, except her perfume. I always enjoyed the way she smelled." He laughed once, embarrassed. Wen chuckled too.
