That night, Sidharth was lying in bed, reflecting on the day's events and what might come next.
"Mom's going to find out, and I have no idea how she'll react," Sidharth thought. "She's been so kind and loving, but what if she starts to dislike me for no reason? I don't care much, but maybe things will smooth out at home eventually. I shouldn't stress too much, and Shehnaaz must be feeling really hurt. I should text her and let her know that everything is okay so she doesn't worry."
He sent a message:
"Sorry for leaving so abruptly. I didn't even say a proper goodbye. Don't worry, everything is fine. Let's meet at college tomorrow and talk things over."
Sidharth locked his phone, put it on charge, and went to the kitchen where his mother was watching TV.
"What's with the sulking?" his mother asked.
He didn't reply, so she continued, "Your friend didn't eat properly. Did something go wrong? What did she say?"
"She ate and left quickly because she had some work," Sidharth explained.
"Well, the girl seems nice. She's just a friend, right? Or is there something more?" his mother inquired.
"Yes, just a friend, Mom. And I remember the issue with the glass. I haven't forgotten," Sidharth said.
"Beta, you know how I am. Please try to understand my concerns," his mother said.
Sidharth silently went back to his room and checked his phone, which still had no reply from Shehnaaz.
The next day, many students came up to Sidharth at college, praising their performance. They asked about Shehnaaz, who had become quite famous after the performance, but she was absent.
Sidharth was looking for her. "Her name is being talked about everywhere. She should have been here to hear all the praise," Sidharth thought.
He messaged her again:
"Aren't you coming today? You should come and hear all the compliments about your performance."
He sent the message and again saw only one tick. He tried calling her, but there was no response. Throughout the day, he kept hoping she would show up after class.
Kaushal approached him. "So, did things get sorted with Shehnaaz?" Kaushal asked.
"I don't see why it matters to you whether it's sorted or not," Sidharth replied, irritated.
Restless and worried about meeting Shehnaaz, he continued to try contacting her. After college, he texted her once more. He was anxious about meeting Shehnaaz, but she wasn't responding to his texts or calls.
After another unsuccessful attempt, he texted her again:
"Where have you disappeared? Why aren't you replying?"
