Ava's eyes twitched, gradually opening with a slow, deliberate motion. A wave of repulsion surged through her as the scent of blood invaded her nostrils, causing her to scrunch her nose in disgust.

Overwhelmed by the scent of wolfbane, she stumbled backward, collapsing onto the unforgiving ground.

Her knuckles turned white from gripping tightly, and she momentarily lost connection with her wolf as the debilitating effects of the bane weakened her other half.

A screeching sound caught Ava's attention, drawing her towards it. It led her to a tall man with dark hair, appearing to be in his twenties.

Unexpectedly, she felt no remorse towards him, but then, to her own astonishment, she uttered a single word that she never thought would escape her lips: "Mate."

Blast's eyes widened as his wolf whispered the word "Mate" in his mind. How could this be? Regret washed over him as he realized what he had done.

He could have harmed his mate. Moving slowly towards her, he examined her features, particularly her eyes. However, her words abruptly halted his approach. "I did nothing, so why am I chained to this wall?"

Richard growled, capturing Oscar's attention. "Get a grip on yourself. Whatever happened, it can never occur again, not even if she's your mate." With those words, Oscar stormed out of the room, concealing his guarded feelings. The situation was delicate, and Richard pondered if things could become any easier.

Richard wore a smug grin, his imposing figure on display, with bulging muscles and biceps threatening to burst from his tight shirt. Gazing up at Ava intently, he issued a threat, "A weak brat like you will never bear my son's mark. I refused to bow down to Lunar Crest twenty years ago, so why would I do so now, all because of you?" Richard relished in his superiority as he noticed tears welling up in Ava's eyes.

"F*ck you!" Ava spat defiantly in Richard's face, successfully getting under his skin. "You don't need to bow down to Lunar Crest to realize you don't stand a chance. You're weak, nothing but a—"

Before Ava could finish her statement, Richard slapped her twice, causing blood to spew from her mouth. She clenched her bottom lip, suppressing the profanities eager to escape.

Smirking, Ava looked up at Richard and taunted, "If you truly wanted to kill me, you would have done so already. You need me for whatever plans you have." With those words, Ava redirected her focus to the harsh, unforgiving concrete floor.

"Clever," Richard mused. "Even if I desired to kill you, I would do it slowly." He whispered the last part into Ava's ear before injecting her with more wolfbane. "Perhaps that will teach you not to overstep your boundaries with me next time."

Ava growled in pain, crying out for help, but no one came to her rescue, not even her mate.

Dark spots began to cloud her vision, and her body grew numb and lifeless. She was technically alive, yet it felt like a torturous experience, as if she were slowly dying.

Richard exited the room, finding his son furious. He paid no mind to his son's sour expression, but what startled him was Oscar's words. "Father, you've always had your way. I don't have a life because of you. You always make everything about yourself, and this time, you're not taking her away from me too." With that, Oscar left the kingdom and went for a run, using it as a means to calm his troubled mind.

Oscar couldn't get the prisoner out of his head. She appeared so innocent, her hair even in its tangled state, and her full pink lips were captivating.

Wait, why was he thinking like this? He wanted to be by her side to assure her that everything would be okay. Heck, he wanted to save her. But his father always had to meddle with the people and things he loved.

It sucked, but that bastard had taken away his freedom, his peace, and everything that mattered. However, Oscar wasn't going to let him take his mate away from him as well.

"She's in pain. She needs us. Turn back now, and let's comfort her. Your father dosed her with wolfbane again. No wolf should be subjected to it twice in a day. It could harm her—her wolf," Rufus whimpered in pain for his mate.

Oscar's strong legs abruptly changed direction in the forest, and a growl escaped his mouth as he sped back home. Ensuring his surroundings were free from threats and that he wasn't being followed, he retraced the same path he had taken earlier in the forest. Within minutes, he arrived at Ava's room, only to be confronted by guards. "We have orders from the Alpha not to let you in."

"Move out of my way. I don't care about your orders. He gave my mate wolfbane twice in one day. Both of you know it's strong enough to kill her wolf, especially with all the things he mixes the wolfbane with," Oscar tried to reason with the men, not in the mood for a fight. "Or do you want to earn an enemy?" He raised his eyes, challenging them.

"You have fifteen minutes. After that, I can't make any promises. Your father doesn't take disobedience lightly, and you, of all people, should know that," Robin sighed, opening the door with a heavy heart.

Oscar rushed into the room, immediately going to Ava's side. Her face was pallid, and her vital signs were dangerously low, prompting Oscar to call for the healer. "What can be done to help her?" he asked, frustration evident in his voice.

"The only way to heal her is through her mate's blood. A kiss will break the wolfbane's hold and purge it from her system. Time is of the essence; you must act swiftly. Your father didn't just gave wolfbane to Ava, he poisoned her," Robin whispered the last part, careful to keep their conversation private.
