At Lunar Crest
Asher
All the pack members anxiously awaited the information that had been granted by their Alpha. I teleport to the location where Chloe's energy signal was emanating.
After gathering the necessary information, I looked around at the curious faces of the members who had surrounded me.
I folded my hands as I approached the crowd and began to speak, "Chloe is in great shape. She was about to make her way halfway into the forest to send a signal to communicate with us, but I teleport there before she could do so. The Alpha won't be here until the end of next week." I relayed the message I had received. "The Alpha didn't explain why she extended her stay, but she made it clear that no one should attack, and no one should leave without her command." The crowd fell into a hushed silence at the mention of the Alpha's prolonged absence.
"The Alpha has never stayed away for so long, so there must be a valid reason for her extended stay," Eliza stepped forward to support Asher, bracing herself in anticipation. "We are not supposed to venture beyond the borders, as you all know the rules, so please abide by them." With that, Eliza paced further into the room, until she stared down at a man who mumbled vigorously. "You have been warned. We don't want any war at a time like this, so please comply, or else there will be severe punishment."
A man stepped forward and mumbled, "I feel like there's more that hasn't been said. Why can't we all speak to the Alpha ourselves?" Javier frowned, not liking Chloe's absence. "I don't understand why we have to be so careful-yes, we have to be, but is there something you both are not telling us."
Asher was taken aback by the man's remark, but he too was in the dark about the answers they sought. He offered Javier a reassuring smile. "I wasn't given any further information to provide you and the others with. All that matters is that the Queen is well and will be here before you know it," Asher tried to reason, but the majority of the pack was not having it. "That's it for now; you're dismissed." With that, he turned towards Javier and stated, "Be at my office by noon. We have plans to discuss about the upcoming feast." With that, everyone went their separate ways, while a few remained looking displeased and puzzled as they processed the information bit by bit.
Back at Rival Pack
A few days had passed since Asher's visit to Chloe. Things were progressing smoothly, but then they took a strange turn. Chloe tried her best to get along with the members of the Rival pack, including her former lover, but Richard's personal maid kept obstructing her.
The afternoon was gloomy, with the sky cast in a dark grey hue as the clouds drifted by. The wind outside was howling, creating an eerie atmosphere. Chloe frowned; she had planned to go for a run, but it seemed the weather had other plans.
She quickly tied her hair up in a bun and rushed down the wooden stairs. She needed some fresh air and some alone time away from Richard and his pack members.
She longed to be with her own pack-she missed her people, but she allowed her niece the chance to experience something she had always desired: love.
The word felt unfamiliar on her own lips. She had avoided using it, as she had never truly understood it. She loved people, but she had never known what it was like to be loved.
As Chloe was about to step out, a guard whispered, "Where are you off to, Alpha?" She turned to face the bald-headed man, pursing her lips together before she replied, "You work for Richard, but that doesn't give you the right to question my whereabouts." Chloe turned on her heel without waiting for a response.
She walked further from the Rival pack's mansion and into the wilderness of the forest. Her senses awakened as she went deeper into the woods.
Chloe's bones cracked as she shifted and she eagerly embraced her wolf form. It had been a while since she had let her wolf out.
Chloe's fur rippled as she allowed her wolf to revel in the breeze, the sensation of the world around her coming to a standstill.
She abruptly stopped when a familiar scent filled her nostrils. Her nostrils flared, and her body tensed as she sensed someone approaching.
She vanished from sight, allowing Richard to approach her and bite his leg playfully. "Careful. Don't you know better than to sneak up on me?" Chloe smirked, knowing that Richard despised being outpowered.
At first, Richard tensed, but then he relaxed as Chloe's hand buried in his fur. The slight pain he felt vanished as if it had never been there.
Richard licked Chloe's neck playfully before retreating and using his inside voice to communicate with her. "I saw how excited you were running, and I was out on a run myself, so I decided to join you."
Chloe was about to whisper back when she sensed something unfamiliar nearby. She gave Richard the signal and quickly used her magic to make them both invisible and hide their scents. "Shh. Don't move. Someone is coming this way."
Richard obeyed.
A black wolf howled a few feet from where Chloe and Richard stood. The wolf sniffed the air and caught Richard's scent.
Chloe cursed under her breath but continued to watch the unfamiliar wolf. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw an imprint on the wolf's paw-something about the imprint brought back memories of her parents.
If she came from her direction of Lunar Crest, why did this wolf smell different?
As Chloe observed the unfamiliar wolf, her heart quickened. The resemblance of the imprint on the wolf's paw to the one her parents used as a unique mark for their lineage was uncanny.
It was a mark that had not been seen for generations, and it could only mean one thing: this wolf was a direct descendant of her own bloodline.
