He had made a choice, again.

He kept his throne above the person he was living for. He chose to step away from the path that lead to her. Instead, he took a turn towards the way he had loathed all his life.

Towards the empire that lay below his feet.

Towards the throne that he kept pushing, denying until it came back crashing as it always meant to be his.

"Raja-sa." The address pinched his skin like a splash of boiling water, bringing a shiver down his spine.

He blinked back the tears that threatened to drop, pulling his lips into a straight smile. He turned towards the man who stopped him at the wide doors of the ball hall.

"May I?" The guard bowed at his service and he nodded for him. The loud announcement of his presence was made. All eyes shot toward the entrance and he hardened his face, pulling the mask of indifference as he descended the stairs basking in the spotlight.

Owning the attention thrown his way.

His eyes filtered through the crowd of people who were wolves in the skin of sheep, enamoring the party with their presence dressed in the finest clothes and jewelry that could run the entire nation for a week. Some parading his collections, some brandishing other designers but the common was blinding diamonds encrusted with gold or platinum.

Diamonds which started it all. The root cause.

He mingled with the people who could stab him in the back the moment he turns. He smiled with a knowing glint, playing his way through conversations. He had to keep them happy and on his side. Lulling them into the trap of honey-dipped words that would gain support in his journey as a future king of this city.

He juggled between woman throwing their unmarried daughters his way when he felt a presence. He stiffened at the touch on his arm. He would prefer the wolves rather than her beside him, claiming him.

"You look handsome tonight." The whisper tickled his skin with disgust, his jaw clenched and a vein popped as he smiled at her for maintaining the façade.
