For a moment Gerard froze not expecting such sudden affection. Then he wrapped his arms around her. The same way he had wanted to 15 years ago.
She pulled away a little too soon for his liking but he understood. He was a stranger after all.
He smiled at her " I want to get to know you too" Leila said a smile in her cute face.
"Leila.." her mother started behind her. Gerard couldn't possibly understand why she wanted to keep her away from him so badly.
"Mom he's my friking dad. How would you feel if you never got to meet your real dad. If all your life you would have grown up having a pretty bad dad and then this super cool guy and you say that he's my real dad. Of course I want to meet him!"Leila ranted. Her mother looked tired as if used to her rants but Gerard was looking at her amused." Mom please. You see this is me asking you permission to do something. And if you tell me no.. Ill do it anyways" she continued shrugging.
Amalia ran a hand through get face and have her a tired look, but somehow in her eyes Gerard could see she was afraid. Of what, he didn't know. "William is going to be here soon.." she started and Leila gave her a funny glace.
"So he doesn't know uh?" She muttered almost to herself and Amalia looked as if she was shameful.
"Leila, I saw there is a park right in front. Would you want to come with me?" Gerard asked her, seeing that her mother was in need of a break.
Leila looked up at him and smiled "yeah sure.." she then looked at amalia asking her permission to which she nodded.
"We'll see you in a moment " Gerard said to Amelia as they exited the house. Gerard couldn't help smiling as they walked, he finally had his daughter back. What else could he possibly want?
"Before we start talking about me" Leila started as they made their away to a bench" I want to know how I came to be..."
Gerard sighed and quirked an eyebrow at her "just so you know, you're not a mistake. You simply happened and it was one of the best things that ever happened to me"
Leila blushed slightly and started fiddling with her hands. Not being used to actually feeling wanted.
"Your mother and I met months after she had had your brother...uh what was his name?"
"Are you talking about Wilson?"
"Yes, except I didn't know she had a kid. I didn't even know she was married. So, we met on a bakery, and she caught my attention because she looked so young and tired.."
"And pretty?"
"Yes that too. Now don't interrupt me" Gerard told her jokingly, to which Leila giggled " ok so we started talking and we met some afternoons and got to know each other. Then I was called back to Europe for business. And well, we were in the car...and one thing led to another"
Leila scrunched her nose "gross.." she muttered loud enough for Gerard to hear.
"Yes. But then William was in the United states that month. And then your mother called me that she was pregnant with you"
Leila nodded and looked away staring at the playgrounds she had played in as a child "so I'm a mistake"
"Leila.."
"Oh don't get me wrong" Leila stopped him looking up " it's one of my mother's mistakes that I actually thank her for"
"Leila when I saw you, I knew I wanted you in my life. I should have tried harder. I'm sorry" Leila chuckled at him.
"Well you seem to want me now. So I think that it makes up for quiet a bit"
A moment of silence passed between them the sound of the park surrounding them.
"What your favorite color" Gerard asked her, right now he had no idea how to talk to her. How to make her like him, with other people it came easy but with his own flesh and blood it came a little messed up.
"Black, because you can match it up with any color and it looks good" Leila answered. Stilling her hands which she had started to fumble with because if her anxiety.
"Its my favorite color too"Gerard then searched his brain for another question, noticing that Leila hands had calmed down when he asked she was distracted. He wondered if she had anxiety "I saw you ride horses on your moms instagram" he decided to talk about over all things. Nothing specifically personal.
Leila smiled at the subject. She could talk about it for days and never grow tired of it " yeah I ride horses it's my official sport"
"I saw you were really good at it. You won last years price in your category" Gerard continued, glad he found something for them to talk about.
"I'm pretty good I guess. I won the prize 2 times in my category years following" she bragged slightly. I t was actually one of the only things that she could brag about, so she did.
They kept talking about the topic as the Sun set. Gerard learned that his daughter loved horse riding and was very good at it. It was one if the things that she just couldn't live without. He also learned of Funny, her horse. Or actually a burrowed horse that she had helped train. The horse belonged to a veterinary doctor in her forty's who had taken quiet a liking of Leila and had made her horse available for her at any times. He learned also that the doctor had offered a few times to gift Funny to her, but they had to decline because they couldn't afford keeping a horse. He couldn't help but feel proud of her as she told him all the Times she had fallen but gotten back up and how she faced some of her fears. And he made her a promise to go to her next competition to which Leila grinned and nodded excitedly.
Leila felt glad to finally found someone who would listen to her rants and not give her a few short answers making her realize she was bothering. Gerard made sure she felt comfortable talking to him, he made her feel wanted, something she wasn't really used to.
After he asked her if she wanted cotton candy and Leila grinned sheepishly and told him yes.
"Ill talk to your mother and well see if she'd let me see you a few times a week" Gerard proposed as they crossed a street walking back to Leila's house, below the lights of the lampposts.
"Ill convince her if she says no" she promised her mouth sticky in the corners from the candy. "Its that your car?" She asked pointing to a black Mercedes Benz jeep that was parked in front of her house.
"Rented but by the time yes" Gerard then noticed a black van parked on the other side of her street "who's car is that"
"That's my dad's car, I hoped he would come home later." Leila sighed and opened the front door of her house.
Certainly William was sitting in their sofa and mom was sitting in front of him, William seemed pissed off, and her mom had that look of shame in her face. they stood up when Gerard and Leila came in.
Gerard noticed Leila wince slightly when she caught sight of Williams face. And wondered what was wrong.
"Sir, nice to meet you" William said extending his hand and shaking Gerard's.
"Pleasure is mine. I'm Gerard Lennox" he corresponded.
"Yes, I've heard about you" William answered with a serious face.
But that didn't seem to bother Gerard "I've heard about you too, I came to bring Leila back home" he then turned to Leila who stood silently with hear eyes down cast behind him. "Ill see if I can pick you up on Saturday afternoon" Leila looked up and offered him a smile.
That was only the day after tomorrow "Ok then Ill see you then" Leila then reached out and hugged him, wrapping her arms around his torso. Gerard hugged her back and pressed a kiss on top of her head.
"By sweetheart" and then saying good bye to her parents he exited the house, getting into the car, he drive away. He could feel Williams betrayal from a mile away and somehow it made him glad. It made him Glad that that man was suffering. And he didn't know why.
