Years have passed since then and now Severus stands in front of his bed, waiting to start his 5th Year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As his life took its course, Severus's belief in soulmates as did the memory of the night.

In these years, Severus has become more hardened, more closed off, and more cold. A constant awareness must be present to know when is the right time to do what. A little mistake, one wrong move, and the game collapses. This is why Severus has always been good at chess, or so his housemates say. He hates it though. He hates chess, and he hates that he is good at it.

Going to Hogwarts with Lily by his side had been the one thing Severus had dreamed of ever since he displayed signs of magic. In the few moments that he and his mother had to themselves, he would always ask her to describe Hogwarts: the majestic castle, the exquisite banquets, the beautiful corridors, the moving staircase, and the Great Lake. As though the castle itself breathed with its inhabitants. But all these things paled in comparison to the House of Slytherin. She said that its people would welcome him with open arms. That they had done the same for her. They would stand strong together: powerful, graceful, elegant, and knowledgeable. These were all things that Severus wanted.

So, when Severus sat on the stool waiting to be sorted into his House, many eyes curiously peered at him. But from the sea of students, one stood out, hazel eyes, with flecks of golden covered with glasses, hit him with a spell of deja vu despite being in the first year section.  He was startled out of his thoughts as he heard a soft gasp inside his head.

"After all these years, you have returned?" a deep voice questioned.

"Who are you?" Severus questioned aloud, panicked. This earned him amused stares from the returning students and the staff.

"I am the Sorting Hat, do you not remember?"

"No, I believe this is the first time I have ever met you."

        "Impossible."

        "Sorry, what?"

To say the Sorting Hat was taken back was an understatement. But as he drew away from his musing, he realized that the boy had been sitting there for 10 minutes. So he announced Severus's house to the awaiting eyes.

         "SLYTHERIN!"

The Great Hall was silent upon this proclamation. It was not filled with cheers as it had been for the previous students, not even from his own Housemates. Severus felt his eyes gravitate back towards the glass-covered hazel eyes only to find them staring at him with disdain, much like the rest of the student body. Severus did not know what he had done. Although his mother told him about Hogwarts's many traits, she had not said anything about its students: the prejudice and the class differentiation. No, he had to learn it the hard way. He had to learn it from his Housemates. He had to learn it from the staff. And worst of all, he had to learn it from the Marauders. A silly name that that band of childish Gryffindor boys chose to call themselves. They took it upon themselves to torment Severus during their time at Hogwarts. Especially their leader, James Potter. That name brings a snarl upon Severus's face. He could not have a moment of peace because of that boy. Tormenting and bullying him to get a few laughs. He was no better than Severus's father. A monster who takes pleasure in other people's pain.

Because of James Potter, the novelty of Hogwarts had worn off, replaced with fear and anger. He dreaded his return to Hogwarts each year, hoping that the boy and his band would finally grow up and leave him alone. But each year he was proven wrong yet again.

Packing all the things he would need, Severus hoisted the bag up onto his bed and sat down, awaiting Lily to come and pick him up from his house. Lily, his best and only friend. She was an angel that God had bestowed upon his life. She had always been by his side when he needed her. She filled that void in his heart with her warmth. But of course, Gryffindor Golden Boy had got it in his head that Severus was in love with Lily. An absurd thought, even for the Gryffindor, but that didn't stop him from finding more reasons to make Severus's life living hell.

He was snapped out of his thoughts by the sharp rap of knuckles on his door. He got up and quietly opened it to find Lily standing on the other side with a bright smile on her face.

     "Ready Sev?"

"Yes Lily, let me just get my trunk."

He quickly went to his bed and hauled his trunk off of it, lugging it to the doorway where Lily helped him carry it downstairs to the front door. Just as he was about to leave, a soft voice called out to him.

    "Severus."

Severus turned around and smiled as his mother approached them with her arms open. He dove in for a hug and burrowed his head into her neck, taking comfort in her familiar scent. Lily smiled at the scene in front of her.

"Have a good year Severus. Please stay safe."

   "I will Mother, don't worry."

Severus extracted himself from his mother's arms and walked towards Lily. She gave a polite greeting to his mother before taking Severus's hand and walking out the door.

   "Excited Sev?"

"With Potter and his Gryffindorks constantly trying to come up with creative ways to bully me, I don't think so," said Severus with a sullen look on his face.

"I really wish they would grow up already."

   "So do I."

"I felt like laughing when my Mother said 'have a good year' because we both know that's not possible with Potter around," Severus ranted, already feeling his rage explode as thoughts of the brunet came flooding into his head.

Oh if only Severus knew what he had been in for this year.
