PART TWO.

Dang... You slept good.

After the initial encounter with.. Something last night, you slept like a bear in hibernation after hours of questioning what it was. The memories of last night were a blur, oh well. You sat up on the stone floor as you stretched your limbs, hearing the satisfying pops and cracks. You exit the cave through the other side, finding a clearing amongst the trees and looking up at the sky.

The sun was almost above you, Indicating that you woke up a little before noon. You spent most of your time scavenging through the forests and vine covered buildings. In the explorers bag, you found an old camera which looked like it came out in the early 2000's, along with a few old musty pictures. You find a pocket knife, a rope, some old gloves, an expired energy bar, etcetera.

In one of the buildings, you see what looked to be an office filled with mermaid 'sighting' pictures hung up, along with stacks of documents and newspapers. You collected some more firewood, and any fruits you could get your hands on. You were too scared to go into the ocean, let alone into the woods for food, fruits are your only option for nownow— oh, and mushrooms.

You just hoped you can find a way to filter the water for it to be drinkable, dying either from the bacteria in the water or the salt in the ocean water. As you haul your bag filled with edible goods, you stop right in your tracks as you notice a dead fish laying on the spot you once slept. An array of teeth marks and blood pooling down underneath it, you didn't smell anything putrid from it, almost like it was freshly killed.

You put down your stuff, carefully— you pick up the fish. It was a blue fish, or is it? You're not a big fish consumer to tell the difference of every fish. You thought about eating.. but what if it was some animal's food? Maybe some fox or coyote left it here to eat it later? Wait no— that's uncharacteristic. They'd just... Eat it right away, you haven't seen any other animals here beside the occasional birds, bugs, and that one deer you spotted.

Oh well, better off than letting it go to waste. You thought as you grab your pocket knife, remembering that time when you gutted out a frog for a science project in high school.

The fish was fine, unseasoned but fine. It filled your stomach by the time being along with some berries (you hope) wasn't poisonous. Now, the sky is painted in shades of orange and pink, the sun setting to sleep. You swing your legs above the water,  questioning.. pondering.. daydreaming.....

Splash! — Splishhh

The sound caught you off guard, you immediately bolted up and glared at your surroundings, nothing. You sighed, maybe it was some fish. Something sparkling grabbed your attention, your heart almost leaped once you caught someone staring at you, you didn't expect them to have empty glowing sockets though.

You took note once more when you realise that he wasn't staring directly eye to eye. He just, observed you. From what you could see— he was only a few feet away. Dark hair, tanned skin, star like sparkles decorating his shoulders like freckles, and what looked to be a necklace with a red gem and shiny blue-green like rocks. He looked like he came straight from a fantasy world.

His mouth was open the slightest, almost astonished. eyes squinting as he examined you from afar. To be fair, it was awkward. "Hel– hello?" He waved a friendly hand, you weren't the most social and right now your lack of skills is noticeable. "Hi, um, dude.. mister? ya just gonna s-stand there or what?" You let out an awkward chuckle in an attempt to make this less weird.

You see him looking over the area, like searching for something before looking satisfied — for some reason. You were still waiting for him to greet you back. He dips  back down for a moment, a blur of blue and cyan underneath the water which trails towards you, oh— he' s closer now. He popped his head back up, it almost reminded you of a mole popping out of its hidey hole.

you sit cross legged near the edge to seem more relaxed. "Hey." He pipes up.

"Hi." You respond. "So, uh.. cool costume ya got there, you must really like mermaids." Oh God that sounds more cliche than expected. Truthfully, you were in denial that he could be an actual mermaid. It has to be a costume, but what about the eyes? Crap you forgot about that part— never mind, this is a mermaid or some humanoid underwater creature who has lightbulbs for eyes.

"Coz-toom? What's a c-coz-toom?"

Oh dang he really could be a mermaid— all the evidence is there— wait, keep calm now, keep calm, we don't wanna freak out now.

"Um– it's like- dressing up as someone or s-something you're not?" Wow, the temperature is dropping fast. The sky is "I should really start a fire i-if you could excuse me." You moved a few feet back as you dumped some sticks and other dry pieces of wood to one spot, before lighting it up with your lighter. The stone floor was rough and cold, you could hear crickets outside and the cave and sounds of far away water dripping from the stalagmite.

Your hands hover over the fire, occasionally rubbing them together to preserve some heat. Your arms hugged the heavy bag as you slump over it. You hear splashing nearby. Your head moved to the side, startled for a moment when you realise that the only other person in the cave— hoisted himself atop the edge of the rock and crawled towards you. sharp claws left marks on the rocky floor before he finally came to a stop just two feet away from you, holding himself up on his elbows.

During this, you already jumped and stepped away from him, spewing some weird noises. "Wha- hey- hey- HEY— Stop that!"

"What?" He stared at you with empty white sockets, without the luminescent glow he'd look terrifying. Sheesh, reminds you of that time when your friend pulled up their eyelids and their pupils disappearing for a second.

"Th-that! Just— don't come close 'kay?" With him being closer to the fire's light, his face became clearer, he looked tired. The man— merman's cheeks were an unnatural shade of blue with pointy ears like what cosplayers and artists would typically depict, along his lower arms and hands were the same blue gradient with smooth fish-like scales.

You couldn't help but slowly walk around him till you get a full view of his tail, a shiny cyan metallic almost fish tail with small flippers on the side, his tail fin was wide and shaped like a crescent moon. It looked like a scene straight from a fantasy movie. Your hands fiddle with themselves, you wished you had your phone on you.

He moved his attention to the fire, eyes widened slightly at the yellow and orange hues and the warm atmosphere it gave off. His hand moves to touch the fire. "Egh— no!" You slapped his hand, wiggling a finger at him. "No! You don't touch that."

His face scrunches up in response, but listens to your advice when he backs away a tad little. "It's.. a baby." What?

"Im— I'm sorry?" He says it so confidently too, he points to the fire.

"It's a baby, a baby sun."

"Pfft— what? The sun doesn't have kids." He seems to disagree when he frowns upon you. The height difference is kind of hilarious since you're standing and he physically couldn't.

"Yes it does, you– you humans make them all the time." One hand is raised up, waving— almost mimicking the gesture of someone waving a torch. "You make them when it's dark and cold." Oh well, that's one thing he actually got right.

"Yeah well— this isn't the sun's baby." You gesture to the fire. "It's called fire, they're different." You point a finger upwards to prove your point. "The sun is a star, it's huge and gives off sunlight. The fire— isn't a star, they can be small and big, and very dangerous." The merman doesn't give a response, instead he looks at it with a newfound understanding.

Oh well, at least you're not alone here.
