That Tuesday Eddie had her next appointment with her OB/GYN and Emily was going with her and Jamie to check up on the baby. They got ready and ate breakfast in quiet excitement and went downstairs to get into the car. As they drove to her doctor's office, Emily had a sudden thought.
"Mom, do you have any idea what the baby maybe?"
"You mean like a gut feeling?" Eddie asked.
"Yeah," Emily responded. Jamie grinned because he and Eddie had just talked about this the night before.
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a girl, but obviously there's no proof of that, yet," She answered with a smile.
"Cool, maybe we'll find out what it is today."
"The doctor did say that was a possibility now that I am 16 weeks though it is still early, so we'll see." Emily nodded and Jamie parked the car. They got out and walked in. Eddie signed herself in and they sat together as they waited for her name to be called.
"Edit Reagan?" A nurse called and the three stood to follow her to the exam room. She motioned for Emily and Jamie to take a seat in the chairs and for Eddie to climb onto the exam table. They complied and before being asked Eddie laid back and lifted her shirt so that she could perform the ultrasound.
"How are you today, Edit?"
"Please call me Eddie, and I'm good." The nurse, Bailey nodded.
"Any new symptoms or any that have gone away?"
"The nausea has faded along with the faint dizziness that always accompanied it. I have noticed that if I am on my feet for too long they have started to swell, I have also started noticing some cravings. I can feel the flutters getting stronger and starting to feel more like kicks."
"Excellent, it sounds like everything is progressing nicely. Shall we have a look?"
"Absolutely," Eddie replied and Bailey squirted the gel onto the transducer and placed it on Eddie's stomach. Once she found the heartbeat, she turned on the machine's volume so they could hear it. All three teared up as they listened when suddenly it sounded very different with only a slight movement on the transducer. Eddie cleared her throat.
"Bailey, does that mean what I think it means?" She asked.
"If you think it means that there's a second heartbeat and therefore a second baby, yes it does." She replied and continued to take measurements, now of both of the babies. Eddie turned to look at Jamie who had tears running down his cheeks, and Emily who was smiling so hard it looked like it might be painful.
"I take it by your reactions, you didn't know?"
"We did not. I had no idea. Is everything still alright with both of them?" Eddie managed.
"Everything looks like it's supposed to. Doctor Yates will be in shortly and she should be able to answer any questions you have, she'll probably want to take a look herself, as well." Bailey reassured her and handed her a paper towel to clean her belly.
"Thank you."
"Of course, congratulations," Bailey replied as she left the room.
"Twins?" Emily squealed.
"Apparently so." Eddie chuckled.
"I'm really glad we bought such a big house, at least we'll have the space," Jamie added, still in shock. Emily laughed.
"I'm glad I'll be able to help Pops with them after you both go back to work, I don't know if he would last by himself," Emily replied. Eddie nodded.
"That's true, I guess as soon as we move, we'll have to start buying two of everything," Eddie added.
Before anyone else could respond, the doctor knocked on the door and came in.
"I hear we've learned something exciting today, how is everyone doing?"
"We're good, a little in shock," Eddie replied.
"That makes sense, I'm going to take a look, alright?" Dr. Yates replied as she took a seat and pulled out the transducer and added some more gel.
"Alright," Eddie replied and pulled her shirt back up. Dr. Yates pressed the transducer to her stomach and took a few moments to check on the babies and managed to find out they were identical and she also managed to see one of the genders, which means she knew both of them.
"Alright, so they are identical, and one of them is being generous enough to tell us what they are, would you like to know?"
"Can you put it in an envelope so we can get a cake made? We'd like to find out at the same time as our family."
"Of course, I'll make sure you guys get that before you leave. Everything looks very good, I'll want to see you a bit more often to check in, just because this just became a high-risk pregnancy and I want to be cautious. This also means that you may deliver earlier than expected, but we'll do everything we can to keep that from happening too early."
"Okay, should I increase my prenatal vitamins?"
"No, but I am going to have you take an extra folic acid supplement because your levels are a little low, especially for twins." Eddie nodded.
"Alright, we'll get these pictures printed, and I will get you that envelope with the genders."
"Thanks, doc," Jamie replied as Eddie wiped off her belly and sat up.
"Absolutely, I want you two to call me if you have any questions, I'll have them set up another appointment in four weeks, when you check out they'll have that envelope for you." Dr. Yates replied before handing Eddie the envelope with the ultrasound pictures and leaving the room.
"You think we should wait until after we move when we have everyone over to see the house for the first time?" Jamie asked.
"That could be fun, we could do like a Sunday dinner and tell them with the cake for dessert," Emily added.
"Yeah, but let's tell them about the twins before that. I don't want all of that information to overwhelm Pops and have him keel over." Eddie half-joked. Emily giggled.
"Good point," Jamie replied.
"I think we should call a family meeting at your dad's and let them squirm a bit before we tell them." Eddie chuckled.
"That's genius!" Emily laughed and they got up to leave. They stopped at the desk to check out. Eddie got the appointment card and the envelope with the genders and they walked outside and to the car where Jamie sent out a text in the group chat to meet at Frank and Henry's that night.
Jamie and Eddie purposely showed up to Frank and Henry's later than everyone so nobody could try and get anything out of them. When they walked in they went straight to the table where they knew everyone else would be.
"Finally." Danny says exasperated.
"Yeah, where have you guys been? You're the ones that called this family meeting." Erin added.
"You know, if they're going to be so whiny, maybe we shouldn't tell 'em, babe." Jamie quipped. Emily giggled.
"No, we have to tell them Jamie."
"Tell us what?" Linda asked curiously.
"I went back to the doctor today and we learned something very exciting," Eddie replied and looked to Jamie.
"Oh, can you please just tell them?!" Emily asked excitedly.
"We're having twins." Jamie said flatly. For a moment they could only look at each other in shock.
"Seriously?"
"Well, that's not what I was expecting to hear."
"Do you two ever do anything small?" The responses all came at once and chaos ensued as they all got up to hug them.
"Identical or fraternal?" Linda asked as they calmed down a bit.
"Identical. And before any of you ask, no we don't know what they are, yet. It was too early." Eddie replied. The family calmed down and talked for a while before they all had to leave. They said their goodbyes and went their own ways.
