Andrew's Academy (Picture not mine)
Every single student held their breath during last period of Andrew's Academy, male and female alike. Students passing Toby in the hall would look to him and stare at his lips, wondering if they would be picked to pin him down and steal a kiss from him. Toby would pretend he didn't see the stares, teachers would try to not seem interested. Of course some of them knew, but they simply overlooked it, pretending it didn't happen or secretly keeping an eye out for the student.
When the bell finally went, the students all rushed to the third oval to get first into the change rooms. Those who didn't fit, poured out onto the pavement and oval. Everyone passed up a scrap of paper each - some neatly folded and some scrunched up. Everyone gave it to one person, balancing on a stall with the mascot head in his hands. People shoved the papers into the head and when everyone had their names in it, he put his hand in and mixed it. As a thin, neatly folded paper was chosen, the name called out in a breathless shout, a murmur began. It grew, and grew, and fueled by confusion and curiosity it grew into a roar.
A roar that was heard a couple of streets down, where Toby stood by the bus stop, one earphone in his ear as a book sat, open, on his lap, a finger traced under a line as he read along. Looking up, the young boy looked in the direction of the school, wondering just who would try to smooth him up enough to kiss him.
He turned up the volume and turned back to his book.
