Author's Notes: The sort of continuation of the story? Everyone is going to have at least a chapter to themselves unless they suffer under my bias, that means they'll get more chapters ahaha. Reader-tan is still kinda a log here but she gets interesting later on. I promise.
"Oh my, someone's entered the forest border?"
Joshua stopped writing and stared into space for a moment before turning to his partner with a smirk. Where Neku's ears perked and set a frown as his response. He adjusted his seat on the window bane of the shrine and continued his long distance stare outside instead.
"Probably just some wanderers, they'll go after they see a ghoul stalking about or something." he replied.
"I thought when you transition, your hearing and eyesight usually gets better but its the opposite for you apparently?" his companion chuckled lightly, "Better have another look, Neku. Vanitas is acting up again, that poor boy can't even control his hunger."
Neku wrinkled his brows, Vanitas was no 'poor boy' by any means.
"What am I a guard dog?... If you think I'm going to leash up Vanitas again-" Neku paused his mid sentence, snapping his head towards the window. Eyes switching from a dull blue to a striking amber instead while glaring into the dark woods beyond.
Joshua smiled and returned to his work.
"Josh, I'm going out."
"Careful now~ Come back safely~" Joshua sang, waving a hand, watching Neku march out of the wooden shrine and adjust his fox mask onto his face before taking off in a dash.
The air was unexpectedly dry and yet heavy as he dashed towards where Vanitas and the humans had gathered. He had hoped to reach them before anymore blood was spilt. Each long jump was quick and precise to travel long distance, the metallic smell of blood was getting stronger as well. Dry leaves crunch under even his soft, quick steps.
"It's here." he murmured to himself as he spotted a trail of corpses, all pale and minimal splatters of blood around. "It stinks... Where is she...?"
Neku pushed his mask off to the side, letting his still golden eyes scan into the woods. Managed to zone into a lone figure shivering around a mile away from his own position, he delays no more and continues speeding towards his destination.
And he reaches it within thirty seconds.
You nearly sink to your knees when a wall of fire intercepted between yourself and your attacker. Too preoccupied by the sudden blue wall of heat to notice, his annoyance.
"Vanitas... haven't you done enough?"
The young Vampire's previous grin couldn't drop any quicker as he heard the voice echo above the crackling blue fire. "You dirty fox getting in my way again, just a few snacks. That's all." the boy shrugged as if the matter was something small to fret over.
"Then take a hike, I think the blood of three grown men is enough for you." Neku continued, eyes glaring through the holes of his mask, trained on the Vanitas. "If you don't hurry, your brothers are probably off somewhere crying again."
Vanitas scoffed and vanished, leaving on a trail of a breeze behind of his extreme speed.
The fire wall died down, you felt like you had a close shave with death itself. Flinching away from a touch on your shoulder, stumbling back a few steps away from the new intruder.
"Hey, hey, hey. It's okay. I'm not going to hurt you." he said in a soft voice, he was careful not to make any sudden movements to scare you any further. The way you were shuffling backwards. "It's alright, here," he moved his mask away from his face.
"I-I..."
The back of your heel snagged on the uprighted root sending you tumbling down. A hand quickly pulled you back, saving you from your fall. Like a marionette you were pulled at your joints into a hard chest cushioned by soft clothes.
"Man, you really are a handful." he murmured while patting the back of your head gently. "It's alright. I'm not gonna hurt ya."
Neku felt your body relax under after a few more pats on your back and the top of your head. His fox ears twitched under some quick shuffling in the distance. ' ... The blood is attracting the others, huh?...'
Neku shifted as your body weight grew heavier and your breathing returned to normal and slow. He sweated heavily and started to panic internally.
"....She fell asleep?!"
