Anyk's POV:

i walked to the quarters of our royal family, though the king had just made it his own. i bowed as i saw king dior through a slit of the door.
"come in" he spoke, somehow he made me feel nervous, always, when he talked especially. i made my way into the door, it was cold, almost no warmth trapped inside that room, since no sun ever saw it.
"you are a trustworthy captain, enromal"
"why thank you very mu-"
"you have to guard the castle of nightly intruders".... i was only silent
"nightduty." the king spoke.
"but you majesty-"
"the maids have noticed strange happenings at night, shadows of a man, and traces of dirt on our floor. but no one to point a finger to. do your job and do it well. you are dismissed." i knew not to go in against a king if i knew what was good for me. and so i left, saw myself out of the room and went back to my army, back to being the captain until it was evening. though i must admit i was treated nicely before i started my job tonight, i was invited for dinner, was allowed a nap in the guestroom, to be on my best for my shift. and so i began. pure silence is all there could be heard, i was at the gate alone, other guards at other places, but i got the main entrance. nothing but some lost cicada and wind filling my ears, it was nice. i love being captain, i love protecting our royal family. suddenly, i hear something else, it was but the slightest bit of noise, like a misstep of a man on a badly placed twig. it made me draw my sword, but....it was silent again. there was tension, as if i was about to get pranked by the prince scaring me. but i heard the same stupid misstep, behind me. i turned to see nothing, but it was so close....so close, it didn't get away fast enough, i saw a shadow move upwards on our twirling stairs, i ran, quickly to catch up to it. i tapped on a fellow paladin to cover the entrance for me, incase i was following a distraction. i lost the shadow, there were no traces, just wind. i stood next to elas's room, my back against the wall, waiting for a shadow again, well, hoping for a shadow again. nothing showed, but i heard footsteps walking a little furter, and so i ran....
"oh! captain enromal! pleasure." one of the maids spoke, not what i was expecting. i hear a door close, that caught my attention, with my sword in my hand i walked to prince elas's door, i heard commotion in there so i knocked on the door. and he opened, though he looked a little rough.
"your majesty, i uh, apologise for the late visit. there have been strange motions near the palace, are you feeling alright?"
"U-uh- yeah! yes. nothing out of the ordinary, nothing has been bothering me or coming into my room. im good." .......
"uh, alright then, if you need me just call to me okay?"
"will do anyk! thank you." and so he rushed back inside his room. this is ridiculous, bothering the prince at this time, chasing a shadow that turned out to be a maid, im out of it tonight. and so i returned to my spot.

a few nights just like this went on, i keep thinking i see things, have i gone mental? am i being too overprotective over my job? though i have not bothered any members of the royal family since the first night luckily. another night arrived, i decided to stay guard along the way to elas's room, since that was where noise could be heard from mostly. i needed to make sure it was a maid. i then look outside, seeing a paladin stand by the main gate, looking around him. and suddenly, a man sneaks past him. i draw my weapon, how the fuck did the paladin mess up like that? was he a wizard? or a skillful rogue? i focussed on where to get him, and waited around the corner of the stairs, risking i might knock out a maid, but for a good cause. i heard the quietest footsteps walk upwards towards me.....3......2.......1.
BANG, my arm hit the man's jaw. the man fell backwards and hit the floor. i saw him trying to stretch his jaw as i drew my sword.
"WAIT!......don't do it lady." he spoke, it was a fairly young man, eyes darkbrown and his hair as purple as a mage's spell, his ears pointy, and his features very bonfrenian. he was definitely not from around here.
"l-lady?! ill have you know sir, i am the most respected captain of alfr-"
"i dont care" he said, i was so taken aback i lost my care aswell,  maybe it was apart of his plan looking back.
"...who the hell are you, and what do u seek? jewels? riches?!" i asked angry.
"something like that, yeah" he said as he calmly dusted his clothes off. to that i raised my sword to his throat.
"wooaahhh, calm down, you've got the wrong guy i swear! im a distraction, you should be getting him!" he pointed behind me, i keep my sword there so he cant get away, and look behind me. i am met with an empty hallway, until i see him running that way in the corner of my eye.
"BASTARD" i yelled as i ran after him, he was quite fast, but so am i. and front flips and climbing isnt gonna help him now. i chased him up some stairs, across many of rooms until i was close enough. i grabbed and tackled him to the floor as we rolled across the castle floors for a bit, just infront of elas's room. i straddled him and raised my fist, ready to beat the life out of him. though he didn't seem too bothered by my gesture, just out of breath from running, which only annoyed me more.
then, the door to elas's room opened. elas stood there with a blush on his face as both me and the man looked up at him.
"alphie..." the prince spoke, i felt those words in my heart.
"ah, it was bound to happen one of these days, she's been after my ass for weeks."
"ALPHIE?!" i shot up, allowing the man to stand up....again. and again he wiped the dust off his clothes from the tumble.
"your majesty-" i started before getting interupted by the prince himself.
"you mustn't tell anyone."
"tell them what?" i asked bluntly, before i witnessed the man wrap his arm around elas's waist in a loving manner, their chests connected as elas looked my way.
"this is alpha, my fiance." ....i was completely silent, i didn't have the words to describe what i was feeling.
"i forgive you by the way" alpha started to speak " you put on quite the show these coupke of weeks, it was kinda fun." i rolled my eyes, i could already tell he was a fiesty one.
"you're engaged your majesty?"
"please anyk, talk to me like we're friends...but yes, its a very long story. we met in bonfrena, he saved my life a few times, and....he's been coming here ever since. you cant tell anybody."
"elas..."
normally, the prince's engagement would make the daily paper, in all kinds of kingdoms. but, they had to hide it, until the land was more free for them, until they were accepted as a same sex couple and as an alfredian and bonfrenian in love, at least enough to rule a kingdom. my heart ached at the thought of hiding one's love, its my own fault for being a secret hopeless romantic.
"you've been sneaking up here every night? for elas? what about them jewels and riches you told me about?"
"im the richest man in the world." alpha said as he looked at elas, a smile grew on both of their faces.
"....fffffffffine- but if king dior finds out i was in it that would be mY hea-"
"you are perfectly safe, anyk. my brother might be a dick but he would never hurt anyone." and with that, i had made my decision. i cannot stand in the way of the prince's wishes, especially not if im talking to my future kings. i simply walked away, i left the lovebirds do what they please as i went back downstairs, a smile grew on my face, just seeing the prince happy.

a few nights passed, it was quieter than usual, i had not seen alpha in a couple of days, did i scare him off? the cicada were louder than ever, i even got a free show from some fireflies to pass the time. as soft as elas's heart itself, i heard footsteps, and slowly but surely i had learned to recognise the heavy boots of a certain rogue. i heard him sneak past me, about to run up the stairs.
"if you go up, there will be guards by the staircase waiting to slit your throat." i spoke, turning around eventually to meet the dark eyes of alpha.
"i knew that" he chuckled. he did not know that, but god forbid he admitted that.
"you're quick, but even quickness cant help you without my help." i offered, a smirk grew on my face as i watched him consider.
"i can do a mean backflip though, i can roll, i should be fine." i rolled my eyes at the bluntness of the rogue before taking his wrist and dragging him with me.
"come on." i helped alpha meet elas unnoticed by others, i felt quite helpful, and proud. like a good captain! even though i knew i was doing the exact opposite of good. but, it felt right, so i didnt quit.
ever since that night, i truly have not seen alpha around anymore, for weeks. i wondered if anything would have happened to him, not that i gave a shit but it was important for elas. i find that man quite annoying actually, too sarcastic and cocky for my taste in people. i gathered up some excuses and went to see elas.
*knock knock knock*
"prince elas, have you heard from your lover?" i spoke softly, not to be heard. he dragged me inside his chambers quickly, closing the door behind him.
"im worried out of my mind anyk, he comes here every night, but failed to show up yesterday and today, i dont know what to do." i was surprised to find out he's only been missing for a couple of days as i have not heard from him in weeks, he must've found a more interesting way up to elas's tower.
"i shall track him." i spoke, not knowing the adventure i was about to set myself up with. with elas's approval, i went to look for him.
